Fresh New Baby Shower Games to Play
A baby shower can be tricky to throw, particularly if it's meant to be a surprise for the mother-to-be (and even more so as she probably won't be allowed to drink any awkwardness away). An appropriate baby shower theme needs to be selected, the perfect date needs to be designated and the guest list needs to be carefully curated (the woman of the hour won't thank you if sour-puss Gertrude from her accounting department shows up). The best way to offset any missteps and break any ice that happens to form is with fun baby shower games.
Let the games begin from the second the guests arrive by establishing a forbidden word that nobody is allowed to say. It could be 'baby', 'shower', 'gift' or any of the words that are most likely to pop up. If anyone says it, they are subject to a penalty. At other parties, this would be probably be alcohol, but baby showers are usually more sedate, so something as silly as wearing a (clean!) diaper on the head will do.
The good folks over at Fisher Price have designed a handy multipack of Fisher Price baby shower games to get things started, including Word Scramble, Baby Animal Name Game and Gift Bingo. They're gender neutral too, which helps if it's not yet known whether the baby will be a boy or girl.
Pinatas are always fun. Tailor their look to suit the party; an elegant Gold Metallic Diamond Pinata is perfect for understated affairs, whilst a colourful Lady Bug Party Pinata would work better for more exuberant showers. Fill them with sweets, soft toys or any other little treats that you'd like.
Just because it's a party doesn't mean that Mummy can't score some practical benefits. Get each guest to fill out a pretty New Mummy Baby Advice Card. The results are likely to run the gamut from the pragmatic to the silly. All in the name of fun!
Whilst everyone should be having fun, it's important to remember that the mother-to-be has to always be the centre of attention. Make sure she always has whatever refreshment she needs and that she's always involved in any activity. Have her preside over the Baby Shower Napkin Trivia Game, wherein guests answer questions such as 'On which date will baby be born?", "How much will baby weigh?", "Who will baby look like?" and many others. The correct answer is whatever Mum says it is. Mum's always right!
Once the party starts winding down, make sure that the guest of honour has help carting off all of the awesome gifts she has hopefully received. Once she's safely sent off in a cloud of bibs, pacifiers and stuffed toys, you're free to treat yourself to a big glass of bubbly.
