Adding Touches to the Bridesmaids
Planning your wedding, you have to take on the role of stylist. Some brides may find that once they have their dress then it makes it easier to pick the suits and bridesmaid dresses. For myself, once it was settled that my husband was going to be wearing his RAAF service dress for our wedding (I really wanted him to wear a suit as I saw him in his blues every day and I myself wore the same uniform – I had never seen him in a suit before) we worked from the colours, in particular the gold of his uniform and incorporated that into the rest of the wedding. Since our wedding though I have seen my hubby in a suit, but for other people’s weddings. Oh well, a good excuse for us to renew our vows one day and have him wear a nice suit for that. No uniform!
My wedding dress was ivory and had gold beading across the bodice, gold ribbon tied around the bouquets and the groomsmen wore black suits with black ties and for the bridesmaids I had chosen long, sleeveless cowl-neck gowns in a beautiful gold satin. The girls looked stunning and they would not have looked out of place walking the red carpet at the Oscars. Choosing gowns for your bridesmaids can be tricky, especially if they live interstate or overseas. To overcome this, I went to Spotlight and looked through the dress patterns until I found the dress. Because it was going to be a winter wedding I opted for the long gown and as a gift I bought them all these absolutely exquisite gold shawls with matching broaches to wear with it on the day. All they had to do was take the pattern and fabric and have their dress made.
My sister-in-law waited until we were all in Canada and we went out together and tried on dresses. We found these beautiful soft pink dresses that came down to the knee. Around the waist was a dark pink sash and the skirt was filled out with tulle to give it some bounce and swish (what girl doesn’t like a bit of bounce and swish to her dress?). Very cute and very flirty dresses that was just perfect for their Canadian summer wedding. We found the dresses at a dress shop in the mall and were very lucky too considering it was about two weeks before the wedding when we found them! Another thing many brides are considering now is the wearability of the dress for the bridesmaid, and are now opting for dresses that their girls can wear again after the wedding. One of my bridesmaids has since made alterations to her dress and has worn it out to other functions and parties.
I have seen some weddings where the bridesmaids all wear the same dress in the same colour (like mine), different dresses in the same colour or the same dress but in different colours. If you are having spring/summer wedding you can either choose cute summer frocks in bright block colours or patterns or go for flowing maxi dresses.
For autumn and winter weddings you could go for the longer bridesmaid gowns in soft, flowing fabrics in darker, muted colours and let them wear pretty wrap with it. If you want your girls to have their own little twist on their look, let them all wear their own choice of high heels, jewellery and hair style. Something quirky that will look great in the photographs. If you want your girls to wear the same style dress in the same colour then add to each one a cute little broach to their dresses, or instead of them carrying a bouquet each, have them carry a cute little purse (especially if it is a formal affair). The bonus of the purse is that unlike the bouquet, they can keep the purse and use it again and again.
Personally, even though my bridesmaids wore the same dresses and shoes (they chose their own hair and make-up styles) I love the look of the bridal party in different dresses but in the same colour. Times are a changing now and you can shake up the look of the bridal party, we have moved away from all the bridal party wearing white (although Kate Middleton had sis Pippa in a white gown) to playing with different styles, colours, patterns and allowing a touch of individuality shine through and the wedding photos are proof that it works fantastic!
Don't forget to say thank you to your bridesmaids for their support with a little gift. There are some beautiful bridesmaid gifts at Pink Frosting to help you say thanks in style.
