Writing Christmas Cards

Since 1843, when Sir Henry Cole commissioned the first Christmas card in London, people have sent seasonal greetings to friends and family.  And each year, many of us are faced with the same question: “what should I say?”

The trick to writing Christmas cards that people will treasure is to personalise them.  Resist the temptation to write one line with “best wishes” at the bottom.

Instead, personalise each card with a paragraph about your ‘life highlights’ for the year.  This doesn’t mean boasting, but simply sharing what’s happened for you and your family this year.  Perhaps you’ve stared a new job, renovated the bathroom, holidayed in Fiji, send your first child off to school – whatever it is, the recipient will appreciate the extra time you take to share.

You should also include a line about why you are thinking about this person at Christmas time.  If it’s someone you don’t see often, or have lost touch with, let them know you still think of them often.

If your recipient speaks another language, you may like to personalise the card with a Christmas message in their mother tongue.  Here’s a list of the traditional English greeting of "Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year" as it appears in other languages:

Basque: Gabon Zoriontsuak eta urte berri on
Catalan: Bon Nadal i Feliç Any Nou
