The Aussie Celebrity Wedding
Something I have noticed about Australian Celebrities is when it comes to their weddings; they tend not to give too much away. It can make it tricky for someone like me who loves to write about weddings from the ceremony, reception, decorations and gifts as I have to try and dig a little deeper to learn as much as I can about their big day. Many will release a few photos and talk about the ceremony itself but the reception is usually hush hush. There are however some celebrities that are only too happy to have their special day made public – I mean look at the wedding of Kath Day to Kel Knight and the glimpse into Epponnee-Raelene Kathleen Darlene Charlene Craig’s wedding in the future.
Nicole Kidman waved to the well-wishers on the way to her wedding to Keith Urban. Kate Richie – Summer Bay’s darling all grown up, wed her fiancé in September last year in picturesque Hobart, Tasmania with 50 guests in attendance. Russell Crowe wed Danielle Spencer, the daughter of children’s entertainer Don Spencer, in a sophisticated and intimate ceremony at his cattle farm in Nana Glenn NSW back in 2003. Then you have James Packer and his $6 million wedding to country girl Erica Baxter in 2007 with the festivities lasting over several days along the French Riviera! Six million dollars! It appears that there are initial reports and interviews but no details beyond that. Us Aussies like to keep our weddings personal and there is nothing wrong with that at all.
One celeb wedding I do know about, everyone knows about is the wedding of Bec Cartwright to Lleyton Hewitt on the 21 July 2005. I remember watching snippets of footage on the news that evening. She was a young bride, pregnant and so happy she wrote poetry for her new husband. They were married in the iconic Sydney Opera House and a beautiful reception followed at Taronga Zoo where they were serenaded by John Farnham, and Bec danced with her Dad to the classic tear-jerker Butterfly Kisses by Bob Carlisle which had everyone wiping their eyes. A low key, heavily guarded event, the Hewitts had signed deals with New Idea to cover their wedding day. The only footage obtained was by news choppers hovering over the Opera House. The rest came out in the magazine interviews and guest comments.
So with our celebs being quiet about their real weddings, what about the Aussie soap opera weddings? There are many to choose from with Home and Away, Neighbours - Charlene and Scott’s wedding. Anyone remember that one? To this day when I hear Angry Anderson’s “Suddenly” I see Charlene (Kylie Minogue) in that great big dress, with the frizzy hair walking down the aisle to a mullet-haired Scott (Jason Donovan) and I was a little kid! I don’t remember anything beyond the ceremony; mum must have made me go to bed by that stage. Thank goodness for youtube! Home and Away has screened twenty two weddings over 1988 to 2005, although there has to be more than that?
Overall the one thing that is certain is by looking at the photos, our celebs definitely know how to throw a stylish wedding! If you are inspired by the likes of Kate Richie, Bec Hewitt, Erica Packer, Nicole Kidman or Danielle Spencer, you will find their styles and themes on Pink Frosting.
