St Patrick's Day Party Ideas to Bring Some Irish Luck to Your Celebrations
St Patrick's Day is the day commemorates the death of St Patrick, the most commonly-recognised patron saint of Ireland and is honoured by Irish expats around the world. That's the official statement, of course, but it was inevitable that a day commonly celebrated by dressing up as insouciant leprechauns and drinking green drinks would capture the imagination of the rest of the world.
St Paddy's Day is recognised by avid revellers as an opportunity to let loose and get rowdy. If you don't want to put yourself at the mercy of the enthusiastic, inebriated multitudes though, it might be a good idea to host your own St Patrick's Day party and invite your loutish friends. Maybe hide your breakables before they arrive.
It's St Paddy's Day, a day dedicated to exuberance and indulgence, so don't feel hemmed in by parameters of good taste. Moderation would be woefully inappropriate in this context, so go green and sparkly and so far over the top you can't see the bottom.
Green invitations will do to set the mood. Insist on a strict green dress code and impose shots of Irish whiskey as penalties for those foolish enough to not comply. Have novelty hats, cartoonish shamrock sunglasses and Happy St Patrick's Day glitter tiaras on hand to help them keep up appearances. Add a hint of naughtiness with cheeky 'Irish Whiskey Makes Me Frisky' plastic hats and 'Kiss Me I'm Irish' decorative shamrocks. Just keep an eye out for guests prone to getting too handy. You can find a great range of St Patrick's Day party supplies right here.
Set up an imitation Blarney Stone right by your door. Legend has it that this ancient artefact grants those who kiss it the gift of the gab - handy at parties.
Give in to your inner kitchiness and slap a Pot o' Gold Leprechaun centrepiece on the table. Tie bunches of green balloons to green balloon weights and scatter glittery shamrock confetti on every surface. For something more understated, there's the elegant green and white Gleam and Burst Shamrock centrepiece.
Traditional Irish fare such as corned beef, cabbage and, of course, potatoes is the way to go. Make sure to stock up on green food colouring if you're catering yourself and have loads of green foil chocolate bells or green chocolate stars on the tables. Drinks should be confined to beer, Guinness and Irish whiskey, although you can have devilish fun creating your own themed shots.
Being St Patrick's Day, activities should included drinking games and full-throated singsongs to traditional Irish songs. Limerick competitions are fun, as long as guests are reminded to not get too filthy with their rhymes. Set up your own photobooth with a Leprechaun Photo Prop for guests to have fun with.
The most important thing is to have fun and remember to, at some point, raise your glass in honour of St Patrick himself. Cheers!
