Ideas for a Dora the Explorer Party Theme

Grab your backpack! Let's go! You can lead the way! Dora the Explorer is the hottest preschool character on the scene today and hosting a Dora the Explorer kids party is a sure-fire way to delight your little people.

Dora the Explorer invitations

Magical Dora invitations will get your guests in the mood for a fiesta!  Or print your own Dora invitation from the Nick Junior website.  Some suggested wording may include:

Feliz Cumpleaños!
We're having a birthday fiesta
to celebrate [name's] birthday.
Come on, vámanos!  Please join us!
[List place, date and time]

Dora the Explorer costumes

You'll never get away easier with a costume than at a Dora party!  Dora wears a pink t-shirt and orange shorts, sneakers and, of course, a backpack.  Diego wears a blue t-shirt with light-coloured vest, green shorts and sneakers.  If you don't have clothes in these colours, then remember backpacks are the go!

Dora the Explorer decorations

Follow the Fiesta Trio's lead and set up a Mexican themed fiesta party in your backyard. Fun streamers in every colour of the rainbow and hundreds of helium-filled balloons can be cheap but very effective decorations. Hang them from trees, tie them from the balcony rails and generally create a riot of colour.

Hang a Dora piñata from the ceiling - a must-have for this theme. Play fun Mexican music and ensure that all the kids have fun sombreros to wear and maracas to shake.

If you're really creative, you could try creating a ‘spooky forest' with green streamers and trees cut from butcher's paper.  Another idea is to fashion a Puzzle Bridge from felt squares.  Or try crafting a large appliance box into Dora's Casa.  The children will enjoy playing in the casa during the party.

Dora the Explorer games

Organise an obstacle course, a mystery for the kids to solve and a Swiper character to interfere with the fun!

Play ‘What's in Backpack?'  Before the party, place a number of objects inside a purple backpack. Select items with interesting shapes and textures that can also be prizes, like balls, bubbles, headbands, hairclips, crayons, sweets and small plastic animals.  Sit the children in a circle and pass the backpack around.  When the music stops, each child feels for an object inside and guesses what they've found without looking.  If they guess right, they get to keep the prize.

Set up a craft table and fill baskets with crayons or coloured pencils.  Provide pre-printed pictures of Dora, Diego, Boots and Backpack for the guests to colour in.  Or inspire the children to make Dora's bracelet by providing large coloured beads, artificial flowers and elastic string.

Try staging a Dora-themed Pin the Horn on the Unicorn game or, for a DIY option, print off a picture of Dora from the Nick Junior website

Dora is a real adventurer, so it's only fitting that Dora and all of her friends participate in a fun treasure hunt around your back yard. You could look for Isla's flowers, hunt for Swiper (cut-outs of Swiper and other characters are readily available from the Nick Jr website), or go on a blueberry hunt like Dora and Boots in the show!

Don't forget to print some pictures of Swiper.  You won't need to remind the kids of what they need to say when they see Swiper (‘Swiper no swiping, Swiper no swiping')!

Of course, a Dora party is not complete without the traditional Mexican party piñata!  Fill a Dora the Explorer piñata with lollies and other loot for a fun way to finish the festivities.

Dora the Explorer food

Kids will get a kick out of Dora-inspired food such as beef and chicken tacos, corn chips with salsa and guacamole, fruit and vegetable sticks, as well as cake and ice cream.  Mango juice or pineapple punch will complement the perfect menu.

Don't be daunted if you're not a cake-making expert.  A Dora the Explorer Fairytale Adventure cake figurine and candles provide the perfect way to decorate your Dora the Explorer cake. You can either decorate a plain cake with the Dora figurine, or add it to an elaborate Dora themed cake to really set the scene.

Dora the Explorer party favours

Fill fabulous Dora the Explorer loot bags with treasure such as lollies, bubbles, stickers, mini binoculars, a treasure map and compass, notepaper, party blowers and balloons.

Dora thank you cards

Don't forget to say muchas gracias to your guests for coming to your party!  Try Dora thank you cards that say something cute like: "What was your favourite part? Mine was having you there to help me celebrate. Thanks for my gift."
