Home Made Easter Treats

Alright Easter is coming up and you are wondering what to do this year. You see the shelves bursting with chocolate eggs of all shapes and sizes but you want to maybe try something a little different, more personal this time round. You want to make your Easter treats this year and want some ideas on what you can make. First one, DIY chocolates are very easy to do. All you need is some chocolate moulds, chocolate (I use Cadbury Dairymilk), sprinkles, sparkles and imagination. When trying something new always have extra product on hand to allow for a few practice runs. I love making strawberry fondant filled chocolate lollypops. Whip up little chocolates, Easter cookies (include recipe) and wrap up and present to your loved ones in gift bags that you have decorated yourself.

Of course you don’t just have to stick with chocolates. Make a pot of jam or marmalade and pour into cute little jars and hang around the jar top a little gift card. Bake your own choc-chip hot cross buns and present them in the window boxes from Pink Frosting. Easter cupcakes! Big smoosh of creamy icing dusted with glitter and topped off with a cute little sugar figure. Here is a cookie recipe by Kim Coverdale from the Super Food Ideas magazine (Christmas 2011) you can try:

Shimmering Star Biscuits

You will need:

125g butter, softened

½ cup caster sugar

1 egg

1 ½ cups plain flour

¼ cup self-raising flour

2 tbsp custard powder

200g packet fruit drop boiled lollies

2 tbsp white granulated sugar

1 cup melted white choc melts

15 jube lollies, chopped up.

  • Using an electric mixer, beat butter and caster sugar until light and fluffy. Add the egg and beat until all ingredients are combined. Stir in the plain and self-raising flour along with the custard powder. Knead the cookie dough into a ball and then shape like a disc. Wrap in cling wrap and refrigerate for 30 minutes.
  • Pre heat your oven to 170 degrees Celsius or 150 degrees Celsius for fan forced oven. Line 4 large baking trays with baking paper and set aside. Roll out the cookie dough between two sheets of baking paper until 5cm thick. Using your cookie cutter, using the 7.5cm star cookie cutter, cut out one star and place on one prepared baking tray. Then, using a 3.5cm star cookie cutter cut one small star from the centre of the large star cookie. Place the small star on the tray, 3cm apart from the large star.
  • In the centre of the large star place one (unwrapped) boiled lolly. Repeat this with the remaining dough and boiled lollies. Brush the large stars with cold water and dust with white sugar.
  • Bake the biscuits one tray at a time for 7 to 8 minutes or until the lollies are melted and biscuits are just firm to the touch. Stand on trays to cool for 10 minutes before transferring them to a wire cooling rack.
  • Spoon the melted white chocolate into a piping bag and pipe the chocolate onto the centre of each of the small stars and top with the pieces of jube lollies. Set aside allowing the chocolate to set.

Why not try your hand at sewing cute little felt bunnies? If you have little ones, let them make Easter chicks out of cotton balls; little pieces of cardboard cut into triangles for the beak and little black beads for their eyes. Sit them in a little nest with chocolate eggs around them. Too cute and the kids will love making them to give to their friends at school! There are heaps of Easter sewing and crafting projects available at the click of the mouse. The time and effort that you put into making your Easter sweets and treats for your friends and family will be far more appreciated than a chocolate bunny that everyone can walk in and buy. Your gifts will be one of a kind and who knows it could start a “Goodie Bug” and you will be plotting your next round of treats to make and gift bags/boxes to present them in! Australia’s #1 Party Shop has a sweet range of accessories to use when packing and decorating your handmade gifts. From gift bags to boxes, cards to jars, ribbons to embellishments – with the help of the Pink Frosting team the sky is the limit with making your Easter Party presents pretty and unique.
