And the Winner Is... Awards Night Party Ideas!
It's awards season again, so whip out your sequins, dust off your tuxedo and get yourself red-carpet ready. Don't let the celebs have all the fun. Throw your own Hollywood Party on the same night and give Brad and Angelina a run for their money. The Oscars is the big one, of course, but don't miss out on the other ceremonies on the calendar. Open your revelry up to include the Golden Globes, the Grammy's, the Baftas or our homegrown AACTA Awards. It's all in the name of fun, after all.
When designing the aesthetic, it's worth bearing in mind that though awards ceremonies are meant to be classy affairs, they but always tread a fine line between glamour and ridiculousness. Throw out a red carpet, or at least a red doormat, to welcome your guests in style. Keep the colour scheme and decor classy as you can (we love gold party decorations for this theme). If you absolutely must have balloons, as I know some of you do, make sure they're at least black and gold.
The dress code is traditionally black tie for awards ceremonies but you needn't be such a strict enforcer. Guests can be encouraged to dress as their favourite film stars, with a prize (perhaps a gingerbread Oscar statue?) for best dressed.
Take a little time out before the party to prepare a welcome toast/roast. You may not have the comedy chops of Tina Fey and Amy Poehler but a gracious and engaging host is expected at this kind of shindig. Feel free to make it cheeky but avoid Ricky Gervais levels of venom unless you'd like a glass of champagne thrown at you. It would make for a fun story but you don't want your exploits splashed about in the tabloids.
The main entertainment is the televised awards ceremony, of course, but you'll need to come up with something to keep you guests entertained during the less auspicious categories. Drinking games are always fun but need to be carefully monitored lest things get out of hand. Take a shot every time Jennifer Lawrence does something goofy and disarming or each time Benedict Cumberbatch is caught photobombing someone. Throw together some classic Hollywood cocktails such as James Bond's favoured martinis and Casablance-style champagne cocktails, but opt for half measures of booze to keep everyone conscious for the ceremony.
You can create snacks in keeping with the theme by taking a look at the films nominated and build on those. The Imitation Game Hen, anyone? Birdman Chicken Wings? Boyfood? The bad puns are half the fun so don't let good taste stand in your way. And, of course, bucketloads of hot buttery popcorn. It's all about the movies, after all.
Finally, send your guests home with their very own goodie bags stuffed with hand-selected treats. It's probably best to eschew the iPads and Prada purses that is the Hollywood way and opt for personalised party favours. Gotta love that swag.
