5 Unique Engagement Party Ideas
When my husband proposed to me it was one of the most exciting moments in my life – it's up high on the list with giving birth to our first baby girl. A milestone in our lives together – and one to be celebrated. Plus I love organising a party, so our engagement party was something I knew we could have fun organising together.
To me, the Engagement party should be a reflection of how you both met – or something you both have in common that brought you guys together – plus it should be fun, nothing too serious – leave that for the wedding....
Most engagement parties I’ve been too tend to be more of a cocktail type party set up. Makes sense – means you can often invite more people, and include those who you know might have to be cut from the wedding list for budget or whatever reason. Plus more importantly, it means you can choose a venue or location that is a bit more flexible or unique, as you don’t have to worry about the whole sit-down tables and chair scenario.
So here are a couple of ideas for an engagement party, both decor and location ideas.......
The Local: Ok – so I’ll start off with what we did for our engagement party. And yes, we held it at our local pub – upstairs in the function room (they pretty much all have one). Fairly standard I guess, but it was significant to us, as it was the pub where we very first met – so a nice link to work into the invitation as much as the speeches on the night. And if you’re not after a ‘theme’ per se, there are still many ways you can work in a “look” for your party, even at the local pub. Start by selecting a colour or colour combination you both like (could just be black & white?) , and weave it through the night – from the invitations, thru to balloons and streamers or hanging paper lanterns in the room, and add in coloured cocktail napkins. And you could even have the napkins printed with a special message or your names. Plus for a bit of fun, the old (but new again) Polaroid camera’s are always a hit, and you always get those more candid shots as your guests become the shutterbugs.
The Beach Party: maybe like friends of mine, you met travelling overseas at a beach party, so for them the sand and the surf is where its all at – and the local surf club is the perfect location for a Beach themed engagement party. Big, bright and beautiful Hibiscus flowers are the classic motif – starting with the invitations, add in the coloured napkins, and continue the theme through paper plates and cups – this is a simple and effective way to dress up the room, even the most traditional old surf club . On the night, its always a really nice touch if you can both as hosts, ‘meet & greet’ your guests at the door as they arrive – and giving each of your guests a traditional floral ‘Lei’ as they walk through the door is the perfect opportunity, and totally hits the mark with the beach theme. End the night with the perfect little gift for your guests - a novelty “thong” bottle opener – handy!
Picnic in the Park: when you know you have to invite the whole extended family, and there are little ones involved, a picnic in the park is the best solution – kids need the wide open doors! Check with your local council if you can pre-book a space too – saves any headaches on the morning of when you want to set up in a particular spot. I love the idea of using the true colour of love, RED – red roses, red love hearts, red, red, red. And Pink Frosting have some great ways to incorporate and build on a red colour theme : covering all the basics, like the invitations, to the napkins, and the paper plates and cups. Plus to easily designate the party spot, hang some fabulous paper lanterns in the trees (much easier than blowing up balloons!) A couple of clever ways to dress up the picnic table, and especially great if you’re offering the buffet lunch, is to display items in these traditional picnic baskets – whether it be the bread rolls, or a big selection of fruit, or even a neat way to hold the individual sets of cutlery rolled up in napkins. And it wouldn’t be a picnic without the red & white chequered tablecloths – either your local party hire place might have them, or simply buy some lengths of fabric. Oh – and if you do end up with lots of little children, here’s little tip: a real winner is to do party bags for the kids – it keeps them occupied, plus it will impress the oldies that you’re “kid-friendly” – and for the adults who are big kids at heart, have a big bowl of heart lollipops – they’ll love you!
The House Party: at the end of the day, the most popular choice of location is ‘hands down’ at the oldies house. Its always a little easier and allows you to really add in some great party ideas. Unlike holding it at a venue where you might have limited access, at home you’ll have a bit more time up your sleeve to set up. One really popular idea at parties these days is a gorgeous lolly bar – big glass jars filled with your favourite sweets, towers of cupcakes, and bowls of goodies. Include labels on the jars for that finishing touch, and little party bags for your guests to fill & take home.
Something out there – Down Mexico Way: one couple I know met at a friend’s wedding that took place in Mexico – so to them it was only natural to have a Mexican themed engagement party when it was their turn to celebrate. Yes its a little “left of centre” but there are some great ways to create the Mexican vibe. String up paper lanterns with festoon lighting, have big drinks tubs filled with Mexican beers, pull out the party piñata, and bring out the tequila shots (served in your own personalised shot glasses). And to really set the scene as guests arrive, book a Mariachi band to bang out the tunes to really get the party started. Arriba amigos !!
