5 Ideas for a Wonderful Valentine's Day

valentinesdaycouple2.jpg

The way you choose to spend your Valentine’s Day this year will totally depend on the stage of life you are currently in. But whether you are in the honeymoon phase, married with children, proudly single, or bitterly broken up, we have a suggestion for you. No holiday divides the population quite like Valentine’s Day – people either dress in red and white and cut their breakfast toast into heart shapes, or they fly off on wild tangents about how it’s a Hallmark holiday designed to make money while making women feel bad about themselves. We say just go with it and enjoy having a day to celebrate, in whatever way you choose.

Romantic dinner for two

A bit of an obvious choice, but if you’re in a happy relationship, whether it’s been for 40 hours or 40 years, you shouldn’t have any shame about wanting to spend the evening with you significant other. If you haven’t made a reservation at a nice restaurant by now, you might have missed the ship. Things tend to get booked up quite early for Valentine’s Day, but you shouldn’t let that put you off doing something nice. Make a nice home-cooked meal (something simple – you don’t want to spend the majority of the evening in the kitchen checking that the soufflés rose perfectly) and just have a nice relaxing meal. Besides, dinner at home means a shorter trip to the bedroom when things inevitably get… romantic.

Girls’ night out

We may be indulging in a bit of gender stereotyping here, but if a guy doesn’t have a date for Valentine’s Day, chances are he’ll probably be happy sitting on the couch with a pizza, six-pack and the latest X-Box game. In fact, there’s a good chance he won’t even remember that it’s 14 February. Women on the other hand tend to get a bit more stressed out if they are dateless on Valentine’s Day. Loads of bars and clubs have Ladies’ Nights on Valentine’s Day with free entry for women and drinks specials. Even if you don’t care one way or another about the romantic holiday, it might be fun to just have a girls’ night out.

Girls’ night in

Hitting the bright lights in the big city isn’t everyone’s idea of a good time. Sometimes it’s nice to order Chinese take out, choose a selection of rom-coms and just chill with your sisters from other misters. You could just veg, or you could make it an evening of beauty with DIY facials and mani-pedis. Just don’t forget the most important ingredient – the wine.

Big singles blow out

On Valentine’s Day, couples tend to spend the evening either in a romantic, overpriced restaurant or at home. It’s the singles that get out there and paint the town red. So this Valentine’s Day, if you’re single, why not throw a party for all your single friends? It would be unfair to say no couples allowed – partying couples are an anomaly, but they do exist, so put the invitation out there. To limit confusion for people who are there to hook up, make it a traffic light party, meaning people in committed relationships wear red, casual daters wear orange, and the staminal singles dress in green. Family celebration of love

If you’re married with kids, and you’ve left your Valentine’s Day planning until the last minute, you may be out of luck when it comes to trying to find a babysitter. But that doesn’t mean you have to sit this one out. Why not make this Valentine’s Day a family affair? Make a delicious dinner, play board games and charades, and each the kids all about the different types of love – it’s not a rule that this day is only to celebrate romantic love.
