Wedding Day Vision
To create your dream wedding, the first thing you need to do is get your vision down on paper - together. Because guess what? Your dream wedding may be very different to the one your partner has in mind!
You may already have some idea of what you do and don't want at your own wedding. So may your partner. Many wedding stresses arise when the bride and groom don't have a clear, consistent picture of their wedding day, with arguments about the colour of the napkins and flavour of the wedding cake a natural result.
Writing your vision helps you to determine together exactly how your wedding will be. But working together to tease out your dream wedding doesn't mean focusing on each and every detail. While the style of flowers and the selection of canapés will be important down the track, at this stage consider the outcomes you wish for. Ask yourself:
- What do you want guests to say about your wedding day?
- What do you want your parents and immediate family to say? How do you want them to feel?
- What do you want your bridal party remember about your wedding day?
- How do you want to remember your wedding day?
Wedding planner Cathrin D'Entremont encourages her clients to select images and items that inspire them. "It may be as simple as a scarf with a favourite colour, or some photographs from a magazine," she says.
Cathrin recommends taking the time to flick through bridal magazines for inspiration. "Cut out the images that really capture your eye. Then put all your favourite pictures on a big dining table and rationalise - take out any pictures that don't capture the feelings and emotions you want to experience on your wedding day. As you cull your images, a theme will emerge."
Remember, while it's your day, it doesn't mean you can do everything you want. Budgets and family feelings will always get in the way.
In her blog, Polka Dot Bride reminds her readers that "it's easy to get caught up in the whole wedding tizz and start to think that if you don't have napkins of the exact shade of ecru then your wedding day will be ruined. Trust me, it won't. Hell, we forgot our reception speech, had a car crash occur during the ceremony and I dropped chocolate soufflé on my dress during dessert. And not one of these things ruined my day."
Expecting that you can have it all your own way is as silly as thinking you have to try to please everyone. Instead, look for balance between your own dreams and desires, those of your partner, your families, and the realistic constraints of budget and logistics.
