Christmas Crackers

Christmas means crackers!  Both young and those young-at-heart love the fun of pulling their Christmas cracker with a bang and laughing at the novelty gift and crazy little riddle that falls from the middle.

But why do we pull them at Christmas? 

Legend has it that Christmas crackers were invented by Englishman Thomas Smith in 1846.  During a visit to Paris he was delighted by the French bob bon, a sugar almond wrapped in tissue paper (with a twist either side of the centrally placed sweet). Thomas decided to try selling similarly wrapped sweets in the lead up to Christmas in England.

His bon bons were a hit, and he soon began adding mottos, love poems and chemical strips of paper that went ‘pop' when they fell apart.  By the early part of the twentieth century, Thomas' two sons had added paper crowns to the mix and replaced the love poems with jokes or limericks.
