Australia Day Pool Party

In the great Australian tradition, get the BBQ started and put some beer on ice. Deck your backyard and pool with colourful accessories and celebrate being Australian with your mates!

Invitations

Take the bright stripes of beach towels as your inspiration, and get your friends in the mood for fun with stripy invitations that say “G’Day!  It’s a party for Australia Day!”

Decorating and styling

Dress up your backyard with stripy string lights, bright umbrellas and comfortable cushions.  And don’t forget towels for guests to grab as they leave the pool!  If you’re planning for a party that kicks on into the wee hours, then dot your backyard with mini lanterns and fairy lights.  You can even place tealight candles in clear jars for a cheap and cheerful way to cast a glow.

Entertainment

Australia Day celebrations should be laid back and relaxed, so don’t waste time organising activities or spend money on entertainment.  Instead, fill the pool with fun pool accessories, scatter the backyard with umbrellas and banana lounges and ask your guests to put their feet up!

Menus, catering and cocktails

Hire a slushy machine and make your own Mango Daiquiris.  Blend 3 chopped mangoes with ¾ cup white rum, ¾ cup of vodka, ½ cup of sugar syrup and the juice of three lemons.  Add to the slushy machine with the equivalent of 6 cups of crushed ice, mix and then serve.  Delicious!

Add an Australian flavour to your nibbles by serving Twisties, Tim Tams and mini Aeroplane jelly snacks.  Throw some steak and sausages on the barbecue, or serve some classic seafood on ice - a deliciously decadent treat!  Embrace the fruits of summer and serve ice cold watermelon, cherries, mango slices and nectarines.  And then for dessert, serve mini ice creams as a special treat, or set up an ice cream bar with different flavours and toppings for guests to choose from.  Oh and don't forget the Lamingtons with a great Aussie cup of tea.
