Wedding Candle Ceremonies

A candle ceremony is a relatively recent tradition that many couples have embraced, particularly in the United States and Australia.

The unity candle ceremony symbolises the joining together of two individuals and two families, and uses two taper candles with a large pillar candle (often called the ‘unity candle’) in the centre.  At the beginning of the wedding ceremony, a representative from each family (usually the mothers of the bride and groom) light the two taper candles. Later in the ceremony (usually after the formal vows), the bride and groom use the two taper candles to light the large pillar (unity) candle together.

Often a unity candle is decorated with an inscription or some symbol of importance to the couple.  The celebrant usually provides an explanation of the ritual, saying something like “The two lighted candles symbolise your separate lives, your separate families and your separate sets of friends. I ask that you each take one candle and that together you light the centre candle.  As you light the centre candle, you are joining your lives, your families and your friends together.”

This beautiful adaptation from an Irish Blessing is also appropriate:

May the blessing of light,
Be with you always,
Light without and light within.
And may the sun shine
Upon you and warm your heart
Until it glows
Like a great fire
So that others may feel
The warmth of your love
For one another.

If you decide to perform a candle ceremony, then save the unity candle to relight on your anniversaries.  You'll be able to reflect on your glorious wedding day memories!

Pink Frosting has both unity candles and stands available in a variety of colours and styles, and can be personalised with the names of the bride and groom.
