Unique Baby Naming Day Ideas

Ok – if you’re like me, third child syndrome “always the forgotten one” – I was never christened, so for me now that I’m a Mum, I really liked the concept of having a “naming day” for my little one – plus the fact that my husband and I are not specifically religious per se, instead we respect all religions – plus we like the idea that one day our daughter Ruby can choose her own path.

To capture summer time, we decided to host the day in our local park – with the local pub up the road as our back-up wet weather plan, especially given the crazy and unpredictable weather we’ve had....eek?!

(Quick note: if you are going to hold your event in the local park, check with the council if there are any restrictions on the number of guests you can have before they deem it big enough to charge you a fee to book a space.......)

As everyone was still in holiday mode, as it was just after Christmas, we decided the easiest and quickest way was to send a “Save the Date” via email and then an ‘e-vite’ rather than “print and post” the traditional way.

I still wanted to have a colour theme for the day, so I jumped online to Pink Frosting, Australia's #1 online party shop,  and decided to go with a fresh and summery “green and white” look. There are just so many great ideas to easily combine to have one fabulous “look”. This also helped me decide the background design of our e-vite to go with too. If we’d had more time, there are some fantastic ‘invitation and thank you’ options.

So on to the decor bits and pieces.........we selected the napkins, to match the paper cups, and the tablecloth, plus for all the little kids on the day we did lolly bags tied with name tags in the matching ‘green and white stripe’ tied with ribbon. As we were in the local park, to designate our picnic area, we hung some gorgeous green and white paper lanterns in the trees too.

We were mindful that given our daughter is only 6 months old, we had to have the party at the time that was going to work with her ‘schedule’ – so we decided to have a morning tea type function and renamed it “Little Lunch” – after all its all about the kids!

Catering wise we kept it simple simple simple – finger sandwiches, cup cakes, freshly cut fruit, all washed down with a glass of bubbles for the adults, and juice for the kiddies.  Pink Frosting have some amazing cup cake papers, and the perfect stand to display them on.

And as for the official part of the day, rather than bringing in a celebrant we decided to write our own script for the day – and asked one of our nearest friends (who is also an amazing public speaker) to officiate the ceremony. Given a Naming Day is not considered an official/recorded event in the eyes of the Government, we decided to take a bit of a creative license on the day. So with the god-parents, we renamed them “Guardian Angels”, and made up a “Guardians Promise” which included such things as :

  • Do you promise to take her for at least one driving lesson?
  • Do you promise to take her to the Zoo at least once?
  • Do you promise take her for a sleep over at least once?
  • Do you promise to remember her birthday each year?

We got a laugh thats for sure.......
