Sydney New Years Eve Party Ideas

I have travelled around Australia a fair bit. The only places I have not been to yet are Tasmania and Western Australia. I have lived in Sydney, Brisbane, Adelaide, Canberra and visited my parents when they lived in Melbourne. Sydney has been the one city where I have lived the longest, adding up my postings, out of my 30 years on this planet I have spent ten and a half years in Sydney so I feel a fondness for the city. What is not to love about it? You have the rich history – it was the first site of settlement. They have Darling Harbour, Circular Quay and the historic The Rocks. There is great food and shopping, and shopping and did I mention Sydney has great shopping?

During the day you can get about the city and check out the sites, walk along the harbour, take the ferry over to Manly, check out the aquariums, Taronga Zoo, the Imax and the numerous performing artists along the way. I loved going into the city. With our kids we would take them to all the family friendly activities, but before we had children, well we had long weekends in the city, romantic dinners at our favourite Italian restaurant on Darling Harbour, going in to see the festivals that were running and after our wedding we managed to grab three days to spend in the city and ran amok like children down at Luna Park – it was awesome!

When it comes to New Year’s Eve celebrations, Sydney has the Harbour Bridge and the Opera House for their stage and the turn out every year steadily grows as more and more people converge upon the city to get their little perch along the harbour to witness the amazing firework spectacular and celebrate the New Year’s arrival.  This year Sydney will be celebrating a Time to Dream. Bars, clubs and restaurants set up parties and you can either walk in or some require advanced bookings. If you are going to head into the city for New Years, look into public transport. I will say that is the one thing I wasn’t too fond of – the amount of traffic when driving about the city. But you get that everywhere you go. Book a hotel room that is walking distance to where you want to set up. In the past I have seen footage of people that have pitched tents and set up camp!

The city always comes alive at night and the atmosphere is electric. You can’t help but get swept up and along in the party vibe and every year, Sydney puts on great shows lighting up the Harbour Bridge and Opera House for all to enjoy. As I write this I am starting to feel a twinge of homesickness for the place. As with any celebration event, you need to secure your access as soon as possible. Some venues book out so fast. If you are going to stay in the city then look at what else is on after New Years’ and spend a few days nursing your party hangover checking out the Art gallery of NSW, the museum and the other fun attractions that Sydney has to offer.

So, just what are some of the things Sydney has up and coming for this NYE? If you log onto the Sydney City website, there is a tab listing all their upcoming events – there is stacks to do. Along with the big party you may want to check out the Harry Potter exhibition that is currently being held at the Powerhouse Museum (I would so go to that! I am a Potter fan). Catch a flick at the Moonlight Cinema held at various parks and gardens through Sydney city. For those with little kids, the Powerhouse Museum also is showing the Wiggles exhibition, celebrating the 20 years of Wiggly success. Enjoy a 9 course degustation meal and circus acts by El Circo at Slide. Catch a musical at the Lyric Theatre, currently running Hairspray the musical. If opera is your thing than let the Fat Lady sing in 2012 at the Sydney Opera House’s Opera Gala (laaaaaaaaaaaaa). The options are endless; Sydney is pulling out all the stops and putting on a feast for the senses this NYE. If you are going to party at a restaurant or club, or park your camping chair down by the harbour, it is going to be a great night. For those who will be out by the water, make sure you pack something should there be rain (has happened in the past!), practice responsible drinking and make sure you have water on hand and of course surround yourself with your friends and family and celebrate the night.

Oh also pack in a bag of New Years Eve party supplies from Pink Frosting too to hand out to everyone! J
