Sydney Mardi Gras Style!

mardigras.jpg

Every year Sydney gets is fabulous on as people flock to witness the Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras which has become famous the world over. It is a bright, bold, loud and fun celebration of living and loving and it never fails to disappoint with truckloads of sparkles, colour and vivaciousness. Some groups are satirical – using the Mardi Gras to make a statement (and a poke fun at), others are so theatrical you can’t help but think “Oh wow!” It is a night of frocks and shocks, the big and bold, and the barely there. I love seeing the extravagant costumes and make up as the throng of party goes make their way through the city streets by foot or by float.

I definitely think you can take a touch of the Sydney Mardi Gras and sprinkle it into a wedding. You can most certainly take a whole lot of inspiration from the Mardi Gras and throw it over your party. Looking through the images on line of this year’s festival and once again I tell myself that one year I am going to go (hopefully with my Guncle) to see it all first hand. It is our own piece of Rio Carnival right here in Sydney. Think bright, bold, beautiful and fun, rainbow of colours and glitter on everything, feathers and loud music and dancing. Make up masquerade masks for your guests. These you can embellish with the Martha Stewart glitter range. Or have a face painter at your event to paint the guests faces, arms and legs. Quirky and fun guests will definitely line up to have their faces painted up and finished with a dusting of glitter and a rhinestone here and there. Add a photo backdrop and props like parasols, feather boas, fans and party poppers will create the perfect Mardi Gras pics for your album.

Fill vases with coloured crystal water peal beads mixed in with coloured crystals. If you are using flowers in your centrepieces, then choose bright festival colours and lightly dust over them with fine glitter (use a big soft paintbrush for this) for that extra sparkle and add a few fluffy feathers in amongst the arrangements. Decorate the cake with edible embellishments such as glitter and sparkles and a smattering of butterflies. Alternate the colours of the napkins (blue, hot pink, yellow, orange, silver and purple), use these colours in your party, and a little more subdued take for a wedding. Go to town with a roll of faux jewels which you can use to decorate anything. Perfect find! Bling it up! Fill the guests up with multi-coloured treats – rainbow swirl lollipops, rock candy and chocolates. Mirrored gift boxes would make the perfect little gift for your guests to take home at the end of the day. Pink Frosting make DIY so easy with the range of Martha Stewart products that you can use to add your own touches to items like the gift boxes, bags.

Obviously you can tone things down for your wedding or of course you can also go for the full Mardi Gras style – okay maybe not the whole march down the streets and the big fantastic float, but still a Mardi Gras theme throughout. If you really want to go all out and surprise your guests, organise a surprise performance by a Drag Queen. I have the privilege of knowing a few drag queens and they are so much fun, their performances are fantastic. The costumes are amazing and the makeup is OMG! Also no Mardi Gras is complete without Kylie Minogue – for a wedding dance play Love at First Sight or Two Hearts. To get everyone on the dance floor The Locomotion works every time.
