Summer Wedding Flowers
In summer, everything is accentuated – the heat settles like a blanket around your shoulders, the air is heavy with humidity, the sun is scorching and palpable. Why on earth would anyone ever decide to get married in summer! Well, the flip side of this is the intoxicating fragrance of summer blooms, lazy, hazy afternoons, tropical flavours and days that last forever. Summer is a heady season - what better time for a wedding?
My favourite part of summer has to be the flowers. Growing up near Bryon Bay, some of my fondest memories are of hot summer nights spent outside with the fragrance of Jasmine floating in the air – it was the fragrance of freedom and sensuality. Ah, those were the days!
Summer provides us with an incredible array of blooms with strikingly diverse characteristics to match anyone’s wedding theme. From exotic Ginger and Water Lily, to the very proper and demure Sweet Pea and Queen Anne’s lace, or to the dramatic statement blooms Calla Lily, Rose and Frangipani. What’s your pleasure? Summer can provide!
Now, if you’re a summer girl, chances are you already know what summer bloom is going to take pride of place in your ceremony – but have you given any thought to how you’re going to make use of your favourite flower? The green-thumbed floral designers at Australia's #1 online wedding shop Pink Frosting can give you some great tips on how to make your flower a striking component of your wedding theme, from stationery and table settings to decorations and, of course, the bouquet!
So, you’ll either choose your flower to go with your theme, or build a theme around your bloom of choice. There are some obvious matches. For example, you can’t go past the frangipani to accentuate a beach wedding. There’s just something about the fragrance, the crisp white velvety petals and that burst of yellow that just can’t be beat. There is something about a beach wedding, isn’t there - something so fundamentally beautiful about the simplicity of standing beside the crashing tide, salt spray on your lips, sand between your toes and looking into the eyes of the man you’re about to marry. It may be the result of a youthful crush on Keanu Reeves, but I just love a beach wedding. Of course, I’d never just march my way down to a beach and get married. Let’s be serious here, a girl’s got to have accessories! No, my beach wedding fantasy sees me walking down an aisle dotted with frangipanis, lined with candle-filled glass baubles nestled gently in the sand, and giant white Martha Stewart lanterns floating gently above creating an avenue through which I glide, exuding a serenity and inner calm that makes my guests tightly clasp their parasols and look on in wonder. Beautiful, isn’t it?
Still, if you’re not a beach wedding kind of girl, then chances are you’re an indoor girl. And indoor weddings mean wonderful opportunities to create magic with your summer flowers.
One of the most versatile pieces for any occasion is the birdcage. Now, I was never much into birds, but birdcages I love! And, the birdcage will suit any summer bloom to make your wedding amazing, from wistfully draped freesia, Singapore orchid and jasmine, barely contained stems of agapanthus and gerberas, to artfully captured arrangements of water lily, peony and rose. For a creative statement, fill the birdcage with flowers and candles, hang them from the ceiling, pair them along the edges of the aisle, or place one on either side of the bride and groom to create a distinctively framed space.
Another way to creatively use flowers is to cut them off at the stem and place the flower inside a hanging glass vase. I’ll admit it - I love glass baubles – they’re so incredibly versatile. You could hang the baubles from the ceiling and team them up with some hanging crystal garlands. This will capture the light beautifully and create a distinctive showcase for your favourite flower. You could also place flower filled baubles on your table amidst some green foliage as a stylish decorative feature. Add some scattered crystals, organza string lighting, candles and beautiful ribbons to create a long and dramatic table runner that will be sure to impress.
Of course, no wedding plan is complete without considering the invitations, place cards, wedding favours and bomboniere. Ensure that each of these elements individually complement your theme. This will not only provide a small hint to the guests ahead of time regarding the tone and sentiment of your day, but will ensure that your wedding is a cohesive and successful event that guests won’t easily forget.
So, if, unlike me, you haven’t had your wedding flower picked out for more years than you’d care to admit and are still open to suggestion, the wedding specialists at Pink Frosting can not only provide you with a list of summer blooms from which to choose, we’ve also put together some wonderful wedding collections to inspire your big day.
