State of Origin Party Ideas

Sydney to Hobart, Melbourne Cup, and The Ashes all pale in comparison to the most revered clash of the titans – where New South Wales take on Queensland over a period of six weeks devout NRL fans make the pilgrimage to the designated battle arena to watch the football game of all football games. In the lead up to this great sporting event, known as the State of Origin the media and public dissect the coaches, the players picked for each team and how the play will go. My husband has marked these three revered matches down on the family calendar and as for me, I sit on the couch next to him wearing my Queensland jersey and indulge in a slice of pizza or two whilst reading a book, occasionally grumbling (if hubby is grumbling) or cheering (if hubby is cheering).

If dear reader you too live in a household where your partner is of the opinion the Government should declare the State of Origin matches public holidays, or, even you may have that passion for the game why not get in now and start organising the perfect State of Origin party at your place for your family and friends. Why not tee it up with two other friends to host the other game nights – a progressive football party! If you all support the one team easy work! If however there are defectors, draw the battle lines (but all in good fun!)

The downside to the whole thing is it is held in the middle of winter, BUT in saying that you can get clever with it. Invite your guests with football or jersey shaped invitations, if you are a whiz with your computer, design your invites to look like tickets to the game. Set up an outdoor heater, a screen and projector and have your guests tuck into fine footy fare like the classic tomato sauce with a meat pie underneath. Hot chips, sausage rolls, sandwiches, pizza, iced coffee, soft drinks and yes, of course beer kept cool in buckets of ice. Create your own sideline atmosphere, play games during half-time like footy toss, have your mates re-enact a tackle but in slow motion (hilarious) and have your own Man of the Match award to hand out at the end of the night.  Use the place card holders like the evergreen holders – just add little goal posts and a little sugar football cake decoration to each one to display State of Origin trivia and tell your guests to take note as there will be a mini quiz during the television ads (make sure you hide the trivia notes before the quiz though!)

Decorate in the blue and maroon colours or just one of each colour if you all support the same side. I, for example worked out that I support Queensland on the basis I was born in Wodonga Victoria which makes me a Queenslander by default (I see heaps of Victorian licence plates on cars up here in Queensland – we must migrate for the winters?) Australia’s #1 Party Shop has the perfect products, accessories to help make your footy party perfect. From cake and cupcake toppers and ready-made vanilla icing which you can colour for your team using a few drops of food dye or jazz it up with some sprinkles. Bake a Number One cake and ice it in your teams’ colours – if you have any guests who are cheering for the other team, watching them eat that slice of cake after their teams loss will be sweet victory to you!

Pink Frosting has streamers and balloons, table covers, confectionery, cups, bowls, plates and cutlery all in blues and maroon, making the whole process so easy for you from deciding what you want, ordering it in and then setting up for the game!
