Solid as a Rock: Choosing the Perfect Engagement Ring

engagementring.jpg

The road to saying “I do” is a strange one filled with mixed emotions. There is the anticipation of spending the rest of your life with the person you love, stress from family members about the guest list, and concern about who will sit next to that crazy, drunk uncle. Unless it’s a shotgun wedding, it’s usually quite a long journey that all begins with one seminal moment – that moment when she says “yes”.

We like to think that we’re not superficial – that the size and quality of the ring has nothing to do with her answer. But when he gets down on one knee and opens a velvet box to reveal a one-carat diamond with perfect clarity in a platinum setting, not many women would say no. We’re kidding. Kind of. Of course, it’s not about the ring. It’s about the person. And just a little bit about the ring.

But when he’s planning to pop the question, it’s important that he has a ring and proposal tailored for the woman he’s kneeling before. Here are some tips on picking the perfect ring.

The traditional way: Some women have been dreaming of the day Prince Charming gets down on one knee since they were little girls. If this is the sort of woman he is planning to marry, she has been leaving clues regarding the type of ring she wants for ages. If a friend of hers gets engaged and has been flashing a ring around, he should note her opinions on it. Did she say she would prefer a princess cut to a square cut? Or that a rock that big would look peculiar on her dainty hands? Has she pointed to rings she likes in magazines? These are breadcrumbs she is leaving that lead to the perfect ring.

The modern way: These days it is not uncommon for a couple to discuss the idea of getting married and then go shopping for a ring together. It might not sound as romantic as surprising her by getting on one knee with a big speech, but it is more practical. This way she can choose the ring that is perfect for her. Important aspects can be discussed together, such as whether she prefers ethically sourced diamonds and whether she wants a new ring or an antique. An added bonus is that it will be made to fit her, so that awkward moment of trying to force too small a ring onto too big a finger is bypassed.

The creative way: Designing a ring together is the best option if one (or both) partners has a creative flair. There are plenty of really romantic options, such as incorporating two birthstones into on design. Or work something symbolic into the design, like filigreed leaves, which symbolise two lives bound together forever. This way ensures a truly unique design that mirrors a truly unique relationship.
