Slumber Parties 101

slumberparty2.jpg

I love facebook. As a mum it provides me with insight as to what lies ahead with my own children. Quite a few of my friends have children well into primary and early high school and it is their posts that help me plan for what will lie ahead when my kids are older. Especially those with daughters, every Friday I’d read their “OMG what have I done? Why did I agree to allow my daughter’s friends over for a slumber party?” or “If no one hears from me after the weekend please send a search party to my house as chances are I have not survived my teenage daughter and her Bieber obsessed friends slumber party”. I giggle now, a tad smug as Tilly is only 5 and Mish is 3, I still have some time…then again, what age do you usually start allowing your kids to have their friends over for slumber parties?

As a parent, having your child’s friends sleep over allows you to get to know your child’s friends and can help you cement your “Cool Parent” status at the school, especially with the help of Australia’s #1 Party Shop! If you have kids between the ages of 7 and 12 you can make their birthday party a slumber party and why not try some of these options to make it a fun night for the kids:

Turn your lounge room into the movie theatre/camp site. If you have a flair for the dramatic make up a wooden frame to sit over the television and hang either sparkly decorations or a red table cloth cut in half and create curtains that are slid back and secured just like at the cinemas. Before they settle down for the movie or movie marathon have some fun with it by having a movie snack bar with buckets of popcorn, banana sundaes and ice cream van treats (with portion cups and jars with yummy topping options), fairy floss, and mixed lollies and chips bagged up in cellophane bags for them to choose from along with their movie pass and a glow stick. If it is a movie marathon, keep the snack bar open so they can graze on goodies in between movies.

Why not also look at turning the lounge room into a gaming station or a Karaoke set. Hang up heaps of sparkling wall decorations, a disco ball or two (paper ball lanterns with glitter spray). Add fairy lights and set up the X-box, Wii or Play Station (I am impressed that I actually know what these consoles are – the bonus of having your 20 year old game obsessed brother around) and the dance and singing games, or if it is a boys only party the guitar hero (make up back stage passes for them to wear for fun) plus any other additional games that they may like to play. If a camp out in the lounge room is not “cool” and they prefer to return to the bed room to worship Beiber or One Direction (I am impressed that I actually know who these guys are – the bonus of having your 20 year old…just kidding! I listen to the kids whilst waiting to pick my daughter up from school – right now my brother is glaring at me, maybe I should not be reading aloud as I type?). And the lads prefer to set up the game console in their bedroom, then using Pink Frosting’s range of decorations, kit out their rooms to make it Slumber Party Awesome!

For the girls hang up some Martha Stewart pom poms and bunting mixed with fairy lights. A few bunches of vintage paper flowers dusted with a light spray of glue and glitter to give them a sparkle. Add a touch of Hello Kitty to it for kitsch. Set up a little tray of snacks and drinks for them. If they are Bieber fans, Pink Frosting also have the Justin Bieber party range! For the boys there are heaps of options to choose from – pirate bunting, super hero decorations, tinsel wall hangings fit for the budding rock star. Of course you are going to need activities for the day time to keep them going before the slumber party and whilst waiting for their parents to pick them up the next day. For younger kids set up tubs of Martha Stewart’s glitter and glue, stickers, paper punches, paper cups, plates, bowls, straws, cupcake boxes, mini buckets etc… and let them spend some time making art that they can then take home with them. Pink Frosting also has some easy kids’ games and activity packs to help you keep the kids occupied. Oh and don’t forget the cake (if it is a birthday party) of which you can let the kids decorate using – you guessed it! Pink Frosting’s range of cake decorating products!

At the end of it, after you have farewelled the last of your child’s friends and there are smiles all round, please make sure you update your facebook status to let your family and friends know that with the help of Australia’s #1 Party Shop, you survived hosting your kids slumber party and can then get to planning the next one!
