Should You Gift Your Hostess?
To gift or not to gift? That is the question. A lot of factors come into the equation when posed with this question. The type of party you’ve been invited to, the hostess, your relationship with the hostess and of course your own personal values.
The type of party you’ve kindly been invited to will have a large influence on your decision to gift your hostess. Events where a hostess gift is either expected or highly appropriate include the wedding, birthday party, housewarming party, baby shower, engagement party and kitchen tea. Please do not make the same mistake I did. Many moons ago, I attended my first ever kitchen tea, not knowing that gifts were the ‘done thing’ and arrived empty handed. Fail. Big fail.
Selecting a gift for loved ones making their way down the aisle is often quite easy as many couples have a gift registry or make specific requests. In the event of a registry or requests not being available, ask the couple’s family or bridal party for hints. For more gift ideas, visit Australia’s #1 wedding shop, Pink Frosting.
Your relationship with the hostess will help you decide on a gift for the birthday party, housewarming party or engagement party. Based on what you know about the hostess and what they would like, choose a gift to suit their personality or a favourite interest of theirs. The only exception is if the hostess specifically requests ‘no gifts’ and in that case, a fabulous card is on the cards. Pun intended.
Baby shower gifts are hard to get wrong. Put a bunch of women in a room with a pile of baby clothes, shoes, socks and beanie hats and you could pretty much get away with anything. The only way you would upset your ‘hostess with the mostest’ is if your contribution to the nursery is a couple of bright pink baby dresses. And she’s expecting a boy.
Events where gifts are debatable include the dinner party, summer barbeque, informal gathering or hen’s party. Generally gifts are not expected but to show your hostess how lovely she is, you may like to bring along a bottle of wine, bunch of fresh flowers or delicious box of chocolates. Yes, these gifts are fairly standard choices but what girl will refuse flowers or chocolates?
Sometimes, the issue of how much to spend on a gift arises. Of course, this depends on the occasion and your own budget, but most people will be delighted that you have taken the time to choose something special for them. Should you be in a tough situation such as recently buying a house, or spending all your spare cash on your own wedding, a homemade gift can be a little more affordable. Homemade gifts are personal and thoughtful and quite often thought of by the hostess as a little more special. So, put your creative talents to work and get crafty.
Whoever the hostess, whatever the occasion, may you be a marvellous guest and spoil those in your life who would spoil you in return.
