Peter Pan & the Pirates Party Ideas

Boys never grow up. Case in point, meet my husband Mike. He is a 36 year old man who works in a highly skilled job as a pilot. Now when I say 3 kids I mean my three year old, five year old and 36 year old. Yes, he too is a kid – a big kid. The first to locate the toy section in any department store and the hardest one to drag out of said toy section after making him put the viking helmet and light sabre back on the shelves and to stop addressing me as Darth Maul. My youngest children shake their heads and “tutt tutt” as he tries to convince me how a Nerf gun would be of “awesome fun-ness (his words not mine)”. He often leads the charge in mischief and mayhem in our household, our two kids only too happy to join in and all three are hopeless at playing the blame game when I catch them building a fortress out of the couch cushions. My cats have the right idea – they stay away from them, but for me, especially when it is in public and I have a light sabre whirring about in front of me and my husband doing a terrible impersonation of Darth Vader (but Canadian Darth “eh!”) I have no place to hide – shop shelving units are too low to the ground.

That said (I accept sympathy for my conundrum), put on a Never Land party for your Peter Pan’s 6th birthday. Celebrate (with awesome decorations and ideas from Pink Frosting) the fact that despite growing up, he will always be your Peter Pan of Never Land with a Lost Boys club House, pirate decorations and bright colours. Make a play house for the boys to hide away from Peter’s enemy Captain Hook, the disgruntled swash-buckling pirate who holds a grudge against Peter after the enormous crocodile ate Hook’s hand! The croc thought Hook tasted so good, in the story of Peter Pan, Hook is hunted by it. Hang up streamers in green and brown to make it look like the jungles of Never Land where the Lost Boys live – never wanting to grow up to be adults they play all day and answer to no-one, although they do miss their mothers. Set up a story book corner to read them the tale of Peter Pan. Fill the room with bright balloons, green lanterns and tie up bunches of colourful feathers and hang up some pirate bunting – Captain Hook is not far away!

Make the party food bright and colourful, but call it “Invisible Food” like in the movie Hook with Robin Williams. The Lost Boys sit down to what looks like an empty table and using their imagination come up with the most amazing and fun food which they then turn into a food fight. Set the table with this fantastic Pirate Ship centre piece and on each end of the table the Jolly Roger decorations. Jelly cups with frogs and worms, ice cream boats with jugs of chocolate and caramel sauce. Party pies, sausage rolls and squirty bottles of tomato sauce. For the cake, a big round chocolate cake, covered in white icing with bright coloured “splatters” of icing to make it look like it was caught in the middle of a food fight! Or make up a Crocodile shaped cake. Place whoopee cushions on the chairs and watch the kids giggle with delight when they sit on it and “toot”. Bowls of lollies and lollipops, popcorn and popping candy with jugs of fresh fruit punch will keep Peter and his boys’ well fed and happy until game time. For games play the Pirate Pin Up Map, pass the parcel – inside each layer add confetti aka Tinkerbell Dust. If you are brave enough set up some small canvases and let them put their little hand prints on them for their parents to treasure. At the end of the party send the boys back home to their mum’s with goodie bags filled with lollies, balloons and some pirate trinkets and thanks to Australia’s #1 Party Shop, a knowing that Never Land really does exist.
