Olympic Game Party Ideas

Back in Ancient Greece the Olympic Games were conceived. A chance for young men to grease up and battle it out in the sporting arena (clothing was apparently optional), showcasing their prowess to the spectators (all male – no women were allowed) and to their Gods. Back then there were no stop watches, slow motion replay and snap shots which allowed commentators to draw all over for the benefit of those viewing at home. But the Olympic spirit grew and over the centuries athletes from all over came together in a chosen location (which was a big boost for the chosen host country) to swim, run, walk, ride, paddle, shoot, volley, punch, lift, spring, tumble, jump, toss and leap their way into the record books. Athletes were the representatives of their countries athletic talents and people around the world (thanks to technology) all chuck sick days to sit on the edge of their couches to watch their hero or country go for Gold.

This year, 2012 is the year for the Olympic Games and this time London will be playing host to the world. Everyone is gearing up for the event which not just focuses on the games itself, but for someone like me who loves a good event – the opening and closing ceremonies will have event planners (including the Pink Frosting Team!) all over perched on their seats, going over every little detail. Australia knew this all too well when Sydney came to host the games back in 2000. I thought the opening ceremony was spectacular with Cathy Freeman running in and lighting the eternal flame that had made its way all around the world from Athens, Greece – birthplace of the Olympic Games. I felt so proud, as Sydney showcased our culture, our heritage for the world audience. We did pretty good! It will be interesting to see what London have planned.

So with the countdown on to the opening ceremony on the 27th July, let’s get in the zone for a party circuit of Olympic proportions. You will require skill, patience, stamina, courage, determination and show no fear to your opponents when it comes to hosting your Olympic House Party. Just remember though if you are planning a big party, like our athletes you may want to look at corporate sponsorship (just joking!)

The first party on the starting line is the Opening Ceremony party using the Australian party supplies from Pink Frosting. Get your buddies together with a great big television or screen and projector and host the Opening Ceremony party in the comfort of your home (although I would love to be in London). Design your invitation to look like the announcement letter from the International Olympic Committee (IOC) announcing that you will be hosting the Opening Party. Have your guests turn up in the green and gold, flying the flag for the Aussies, so tracksuits and Dunlop volley shoes. Put on a spread of fine fare fit for any wannabe Olympic Athlete, mix British favourites with Australian Essentials like the lamington, meat pie, and sausages. Provide buckets of Aussie beer, a bottle or two of Aussie wine along with softies to help quench the thirsty spectators. Use the Aussie range of cups, bowls and plates. The hosting country keeps tight-lipped with the details for the opening ceremony so why not have your guests place their predictions as to what the ceremony will include – Kylie Minogue, Dame Edna, Rolf Harris, the cast of Neighbours are just some ideas. Have a medal Tally Board (which you will use for upcoming Olympic gatherings) on display and as the games progress, keep the board up to date – oh not with what the countries are pulling in, but what you and your guests win from your home-based Olympic Games.

Sit back, swathed in green, gold, Australian Flags and party decorations and enjoy the spectacular opening ceremony which will set the tone for the rest of the games and the following parties!
