My Sweet 16
To quote an LOL Cat “What has been seen, cannot be unseen”. I have been watching the MTV show My Super Sweet 16 and Sweet 16 World Class and my eyes are as big as dinner plates. I had no idea your 16th was such a big deal. The young and more money than sense stamp their pedicured feet and pout their way through the planning of the ultimate 16th birthday party to rival the last 16th birthday party. “No skanky ho’s” was the advice of one friend during the party planning. “No one can like, upstage you. Totes innapprope!” Well I think she has a point? The gaggle all began tittering away about how amazing it was going to be and the event planner’s stiff upper lip would tremble. But their mums were just as bad and they would actually tip the planners to tears! Big, bold, lavish events – a sight to behold indeed as the guests stand behind the red rope and screech their adulation at the birthday star.
Insane parties! Probably not the best thing to allow the soon to be 16 year old to watch. We all know teenagers are very impressionable. If I had seen this show when I turned sixteen over (mumble, mumble) years ago my parents would have put me up for adoption then and there. Now they just take my phone calls and listen to me bleat “see, that is where it all went wrong! I didn’t stage a fashion show of my own label and have a rapper perform. Why wouldn’t you let me be carried in by oiled up muscle men? What do you mean a burlesque dancer is not appropriate for a 16th birthday? I would have been the envy of my entire year 11 class! Oh and thanks for my car, that I bought when I was 19!”
If this story has come to you too late and your impressionable soon to be 16 year old has indeed watched these shows I am so sorry. If your teen is showing the following symptoms:
- Uses terms like “Totes inapprope!” “LOL!” “Totally well jel”. “I don’t care how much it costs, just get it!” “No skany ho’s will upstage ME!” and the big one: “Mummy, Daddy I love you guysssss!”
- Develops a sudden interest in rap music.
- Has printed out the class photo and began compiling “Cool” and “Not Cool” lists.
- Is talking about cars and how “so and so’s parents bought them a car” ,
- Has decided that now is the time to release their own clothing label
- Is aware of venues such as cocktail lounges, five star hotels and their venue hire costs.
You are in trouble. Whatever you do, don’t panic. Since becoming a parent I have learnt that children can smell fear, apprehension and panic in their parents and to them it smells good. Stop shaking and don’t look at your savings account. If your teen is in the room now, just smile at them. Hold it together! First panic and they know they have you! It is alright, you can get through this. Australia’s #1 Party Shop is a call, click or visit away from total Sweet 16 drama demands.
As for me? Well I am getting my desk chair dance on to the two greatest songs ever to come out of 1996. Yes I am getting my Zigga-zig-ahh with the Spice Girls song Wannabe and Los Del Rio’s Macarena. Why not have the DJ play the song that was number one on the Australian music charts on the day that your precious Sweet 16 was born? Sixteen is that stage where childhood fades and adulthood beckons. Of course they want to have a grown up party, but not too adult, so host a semi-formal party to make them feel like they are grown up. A perfect style for a Sweet 16 party would be a black and white scheme with flourishes of their favourite colour. This works well especially if you want to give them the MTV Sweet 16 style party. Australia’s #1 Party Shop has the perfect black and white theme products. Decorate with black and white table clothes and for the centre pieces use the glitz balloon weights which are available in a range of colours and would look fantastic against the black and white backdrop. Place LED ice cube lights (safer than candles around teenagers and helium balloons) and scatterfetti around the centre pieces. For the head table have a customised table runner and small wire crowns (for a touch of the MTV Super 16 teen) with cascade star party table centrepiece. At the entrance to the party set up a Hollywood star floor decal and no party would be complete with a big bucket full of party poppers for the guests to take and use during the birthday song.
Your teen will love the look, and feel like they too are celeb sweet 16-ers. Mum and Dad will be cool enough to party with on the night and like I said, it is grown up enough without crossing the line, letting them still be a kid too.
Pink Frosting has all the products to kit out a “Well Jel” Sweet 16 party without the My Super Sweet 16 price tag, but do not have rappers, Hummer Jeeps or Mercedes. If you do however manage to find some well-oiled buff male models though, feel free to let the girls at Pink Frosting know!
