“Who would be

A mermaid fair,

Singing alone,

Combing her hair

Under the sea,

In a golden curl

With a comb of pearl,

On a throne?”  - Mermaid Poem, by Lord Tennyson, 1830.

I am yet to meet a little girl that does not like mermaids.  The half woman, half fish mythical creatures, some of whom sang sailors to their doom, others actually saved and fell in love with sailors on the seven seas. Me, I like nice mermaids as do my daughter and her friends. They also love Ariel from the Little Mermaid and Barbie from a Mermaid’s Tail.

For an upcoming girls 6th birthday party why not take a journey down into Atlantis where the mermaids live and let your little girl and her friends be mythical mermaids for a day? Australia’s #1 Party Shop can help you make a Splash with their range of Mermaid inspired birthday products. From mermaid invitations, or make your own using Pink Frosting’s Martha Stewart craft collection. When I think of mermaids I think of sparkles – lots of glitter and underwater treasures. Create an underwater Mermaid Cove decorated with blue and green streamers hanging down. Fill a treasure chest piñata with sweets and trinkets (a pirate treasure map or two and some princess trinkets) for the mermaids to watch over.

Some ideas for table settings: white table cloth with a blue table runner decorated with coloured sand and mermaid confetti down the centre and place glitter dusted tissue paper pom poms and glitz balloon weights (for coral), in the tissue pom poms why not include the little mermaid and fish candles (not to be lit of course!), embellish the table with star fish and cute star fish shaped tea light holders but instead of tea lights place little water beads for something bright and different  and these quaint little light house tea lights. Around the room with the streamers add silver and white balloons or white paper ball lanterns – air bubbles to bob, and sway about “under water”.  Fill little beach wooden boxes with gold foil chocolates and a little thank you card – mermaid treasures for the little mermaids to take home at the end of the party.

Birthday cake wise, whip up a yummy white chocolate cake and either decorate with the Little Mermaid edible cake decoration, or if you fancy yourself to be the next “Cake Boss” then why not try a small tiered cake and decorate using the Ombre technique – the colour gently fades. So start with a bright blue colour icing that fades to white. Stand the cake on a gold or silver cake board, add whipped cream for sea foam and some edible gold glitter around the base (sand) and on top of the cake set the look with a starfish cake topper. Your little girl and her friends will love it!

After your daughter and her friends have enjoyed their underwater mermaid party, get them set up in the lounge to watch their favourite mermaid movie, treating them with ice cream sundaes and coloured popcorn (my favourite popcorn).  Australia’s #1 Party Shop’s versatile products and decorations will ensure that your party planning will make a splash and the mermaids will go back to their underwater homes and enjoy their treasures and your little mermaid will feel like she is the most Special Little Mermaid of them all!
