Melbourne New Years Eve Ideas

Melbourne, Australia’s New York City Soho district – a city that experiences four seasons in one day and does so in an artistic and espresso filled way. Abstract art and geometric patterns adorn the city with cute and quirky little cafes tucked away, like Alice in Wonderland you find yourself intrigued and making your way through the looking glass. A hub for the arts and those with a flair for fashion, Melbourne will appeal to you if you love seasonal change, can go from scorching hot to freezing cold and not bat an eyelid; you follow AFL, ‘Beatnik’ is your middle name and you have caffeine pumping through your veins.

On my visits to Melbourne, and through the city I couldn’t help but notice how different Melbournites are to Sydneysiders. Sydney is all suits and bustle through the city. Business, business, business. Melbourne you see the flair for out there hair styles and fashion choices. You do see that in Sydney but to me it stood out more in Melbourne. I loved the eccentric and eclectic mix of art scattered throughout the city. I was fascinated by the geometric patterns used on buildings and managed to navigate my way around the old trams puttering along ringing their bells. The ads you see on the television for Melbourne – it is like that. Only you don’t go around trying to put your Nan’s ball of yarn back together again and concierges don’t send you on goose chases through the city. If you live off coffee, then Melbourne is your city. To sit and be seen, all trendy and hip, sipping espressos and lattes and then effortlessly browsing through the vintage and retro wares and making it look so good it hurts.

So it is NYE and you have just donned your latest acquisition to your vintage wardrobe, styled your chic hairdo to reflect your party mood and finished off your latte and almond biscotti, now what? How do the people of Melbourne celebrate NYE? Have dinner at one of many fine restaurants at Southgate before moving onto Federation Square which will turn into one big dance party for the night and you can get your groove on as you wait for the fireworks to start! From there you can make your way down to the Yarra and the Docklands for the 9.30pm fireworks and good old fashioned family friendly fun. But wait! There’s more, for Melbourne will turn into a city of gold at midnight, brighter than Eldorado (the city of gold). Tune your radio as there will be music for the fireworks broadcast over the airwaves and look to the skies as the fireworks will fly out from the city buildings, lighting up 2012 (told ya Melbourne has a flair for the dramatic art!). Dazzling and chic ways to party with your friends and family as you enjoy food and drinks (it is noted on the attached site that all public event venues are alcohol free zones and you will get fined if you breach it – so pack your little coffee grinder instead). If you find that you are too worn out from your day of looking hip and trendy, and can’t possibly eat anymore after that fantastic meal at that top rated restaurant of which there are many in Melbourne, then relax with a decaff coffee and watch the party as it is broadcast on channel 7.

For those visiting Melbourne don’t forget to travel outside of the city. A personal favourite of mine is Sorrento where you will find the best vanilla slice ever. It really is that good!
