Ladybird Party Ideas

The first birthday is a pretty big deal. Over 12 months you have watched your little one grow from little snuggly baby to a chunky, snuggly toddler who is now talking, walking and sending you grey before your time. You want to throw a birthday party for them, invite their little friends and their parents and let the kids have a good time. Obviously at the age of 1, they are settling into solids, can socialise to a point with other children but not actually play the way older kids do. I believe at this age it is called parallel play. But don’t let that put you off from having a party for you little treasure. First birthday parties are so much fun to organise!

I have chosen four themes for the First Birthday Party: Ladybirds, Jungle Safari, Bumble Bees and The Wiggles. Each one has the bright, bold colours that children love. For your little Ladybird set up an outdoor picnic style party which allows the little ones to crawl, walk, explore and play. Set up some foam mats for them to lie on with their favourite toys and if they are quick on their little feet, maybe look at keeping all the food up on a table away from inquisitive little hands. Make up your own invitations using Martha Stewart embossed flower stickers, glitters and heart and flower paper punches.

For the party, decorate the area in red, black, white. Hang up some paper lanterns and red and white polka dot bunting. On the ground pop some cute little garden gnomes around for them to pick up and play with. Set up the table/s for the party food with rose petal scatters, little ladybirds. Use little picnic baskets as gift bags and black pails on the table filled with lollipops and cookies. For the cutlery and crockery you can use the cute range of printed ladybird products mixed in with crockery in block colours, so red cups, white plates and black crockery mixed in with the ladybird items.

Food is an exciting adventure for babies and toddlers as they are introduced to new textures and tastes. I have a video of Hamish trying chocolate custard when he was 7 months old and it is hysterical – the faces he pulled and the sounds he made. With the birthday party you want to make sure that your choices for the little ones are healthy, tasty and low in sugar. This is where the little red and white portion cups are great for little tummies. Grown-ups can have their “big” foods, but for the kids why not whip up some delectable goodness that is kind to their tummies. Using the portion cups serve up fruit mash (blueberry, strawberry, apricot and mango are just some ideas). Served chilled with a little spoon, the kids will love this sweet (and oh so healthy) snack. Some other ideas to feed the ladybirds – rissoles, broccoli and cheese frittata, corn, zucchini and egg sandwiches, sausage pasta bake and little peach and mango smoothies.

A Dancing Daisy cake will add a touch of sweet to your little ladybird party. Set out amongst the party food and treats, use a ready to use icing in white which you can easily colour with a few drops of food dye. Add the ladybird candles to the petals and you will have a party table that looks like a cute picnic spread.

You won’t have to worry about party games, just have toys out and about for the children to play with (if there are older children attending then have some games and activities set aside just for them). Your little one will be the centre of attention on her first birthday, in her little ladybird outfit. Your guests will enjoy an afternoon in the Ladybird gardens and you will have some beautiful memories of the first of many birthdays, and all with the help and ease of Pink Frosting’s online party store!
