Kids Outdoor Parties

As I look at the new calendar hanging above our phone stand I notice that over the coming months we have a lot of birthday parties in the works. Our son Hamish turns 3 in March and then it goes our niece’s 4th in April, our nephew’s 2nd in June, our daughter’s 6th in July and niece’s 7th in August PLUS we are expecting another little niece/nephew sometime in August too. Throw in other kids’ parties that are a fact of life for us now our daughter is in school and I could not be any happier. This is one of the reasons why I wanted to have children –Kids Parties are so much fun! I love them!

For Mike and I, we have experienced both the indoor birthday party and outdoor birthday party for our own and other children and we both think that if the weather permits, outdoor parties are the way to go with children. The lure of the indoor party is strong – catering taken care of, supervising staff on hand, secure closed in venue allowing the parents to have a breather and not everyone has a backyard big enough to play host to a gaggle of sugared up children. We booked Tilly’s 4th birthday party at an indoor play centre and we thought it was good, but an outdoor party lets kids really be kids and it is out in the fresh air. Two years ago we attended a birthday party held in the botanic gardens and the kids were in heaven – barbecue food, fairy bread, lolly and chips and a whopping great big birthday cake. Those that were waiting to have their faces painted played on the play equipment. They explored the gardens and by the end of the afternoon the kids were burning out but with smiles on their little faces.

So this year for Hamish’s birthday we have decided to put together a birthday party of prehistoric proportions on in our back yard. If like me you want an outdoor party for your little one but don’t have the space or just don’t want kids traipsing through your home then you can look at other options – gated parks, botanic gardens, little spot on the beach, community centres. You just have to know where to look. So with the outdoor venue decided, what is next? The party theme! Our little guy is dinosaur mad. From creeping around the house hunched up and roaring at the cat (Tyrannosaurus-Rex) to having to empty his bed of his dinosaur collection at night so he can sleep in comfort – we have the toy version of Jurassic Park going on in our house.

With a simple click on Australia's #1 Party Shop Hamish’s party is sorted. They cover a great range of kids’ party products and themes and yes, they even have DINOSAURS! From dinosaur candles to Dinosaurs Party Balloons. I will be whipping up a batch of cute dinosaur cookies with the Brontosaurus dinosaur cookie cutter. We will be putting together a dinosaur pass the parcel and dinosaur dig (small sandpit with little dinosaurs scattered throughout), pin the tail on the dinosaur and the kids can charge about wearing their dinosaur foam face masks. No outdoor party is complete without a piñata and yes, Hamish will have a Dinosaur Pinata! Kids love being outside, my two are forever wanting to go out to play in the backyard or down at their favourite park. The bonus is with food and drink spillage, if you are out on the grass you don’t have to worry!

Some things you should also consider with an outdoor children’s party is obviously a wet weather plan of action, if it is going to be pretty bright and sunny, pick a place that has shade available or if it is at home, set up a portable shade canopy. Don’t worry about tables and chairs – kids will be only too happy to plonk themselves down on a picnic rug with their friends (just need chairs for the grown-ups). Sunscreen is a must and if you live in a tropical area like I do, bug repellent is a necessary for any outdoor event. Keep plenty of water available and just get in and have fun with the kids. Get your face painted; pretend to be a dinosaur, fairy ballerina or pirate. Eat heaps of birthday cake and throw in a few cartwheels for good measure. Send the kids home with a good old fashioned party bag filled with treats and sweets and then jump back on to Australia's #1 Party Shop and start getting ready for the next party!
