Is that an Engagement Ring I see?

engagementrings.jpg

Okay. I have just done the Jasmine Happy Dance for all of the newly engaged women out there. Now the fun and sometimes chaotic planning begins. So, you are basking in the light of your new little gem on your ring finger. Looking lovingly at each other all is good in your world. Once the giddiness eases you and future hubby set about breaking the news to family and friends. They are all over the moon for the both of you but something happens. Everyone becomes a tabloid gossip columnist! You feel like Kim Kardashian, fielding questions left right and centre and the first off everyone’s tongue is “have you set a date yet?” Whoa! Cool your heels people! Some women may have a date set in stone in advance of finding their Prince Charming and good on them. Nothing wrong with being organised. Others are just caught up in life and enjoying each other that when he/she pop’s the question you are embarking on new territory. Oh! That’s right, we have to get to wedding planning now!

Every bride marches to the click of her own wedding shoes. There are books and websites available to help you plan out your wedding day. Some girls not only have the date picked out well in advance, but also know the dress, venue, and cake, everything even before he came along. If you are like me, I was like “oh I am engaged. Tra-la-la-la! Pretty ring, handsome man. Oh my goodness…I just agreed to get married but that’s okay we have plenty of time”. As you can probably gather I was pretty naïve, getting engaged at the age of 20. I had watched my colleagues at work get married and I just assumed everything fell into place. It was the following year when my then future-mother-in-law came to visit that the penny dropped and Mike and I were stunned at how big weddings actually were. We’d been engaged for 10 months and Teresa had flown over to Australia for a visit. She was shocked that we had not begun any planning and so helped give us the nudge. We started looking at venues, playing with dates and contemplating eloping or drinking copious amounts of Bundy and coke.

At the time we lived in Sydney and venues are plenty, part of our trouble was choosing our venues. By the time we finally got married we had been engaged for 34 months! So, how did we finally get our act together? Before you jump into planning, take some time to enjoy your engagement first. Bask in the light of your jewel, flush with excitement when you fling out your hand to people to show them and learn the phrase “yes I am engaged” in at least three different languages (just for fun). Throw an Engagement Party (something Mike and I didn’t do). Get your hands on a great wedding planner (book, website or person). Also set up a folder to keep all the bits and pieces, business cards and quotes in and add Australia's #1 Wedding Shop to your favourites as you will be needing and relying on them!

Sit down with your partner and work out a date. You may have to consider work schedules, family (locations, their schedules, health) or the impending arrival of a baby. Once the date is set, you are pretty much right. From there will flow the locations for ceremony and reception, the theme, dresses etc. Sometimes you will feel overwhelmed. My poor mum took many a teary phone call as I blubbered about the most silliest and insignificant detail but in my mind could be detected from the moon. It will happen. It is okay. The girls from Pink Frosting are only too happy to help you work your way through organising the decoration side of your special day so give them a call, e-mail or if you live in Canberra pop into their store. They stock a fabulous range of wedding supplies for weddings and these girls love all things wedding. I wish I had these girls on side when I was getting married!
