Ideas for Non-Cake Wedding Cakes

weddingbar.jpg

Not every bride and groom is tickled by the traditional wedding cake. Some want to be bold and daring and venture into different baked cake treats for their wedding guests to admire and enjoy. Fruit cake has been replaced by chocolate, vanilla, red velvet, chocolate mud, the list goes on and on. If you can dream it, you will find a cake expert who can create it. The tiered cakes have taken on various shapes and styles. From round and square to cakes that look like suitcases, books, castles (aka Fergie and Josh Duhamels’ wedding cake), cars, boats and it goes on and on!

BUT! There is more!!! Couples are now moving away from the one cake or tiered cake and opting to treat their guests to new and exciting cake concepts. Cupcakes have proved a very popular choice at wedding receptions now. You don’t have to worry about having a big heavy cake balanced in to the room to be viewed and then out of the room to the kitchen to then be cut up into pieces for the guests. Cupcakes you can display on cute cupcake stands or on mirrors (as I saw at a previous event). Guests are able to go up and take a cupcake – no plates required and cupcakes bring out the inner kid in us all. We all love a good cupcake (my weakness is for red velvet cupcakes!)

Cake pops are starting to gain notoriety in wedding circles as a neat treat. Cake pops are easy and inexpensive to make, and are so cute. Chocolate dipped balls of cake goodness, one or two for each guests. If you have children at your wedding they will LOVE this idea! Decorate them in edible glitter, swirl it around the cake ball to make them look like lollypops. You can even colour the icing to match your wedding colours. You can also include other options like macaroons, mini baked cheesecakes, ice cream cake, or whip up batches of cookies in different shapes and sizes. Make up little wedding dress and suit cookies and ice them with white and black icing. Or do different shapes such as the wedding car, wedding dress, wedding shoe, crown, suit cookie cutter shapes and have them in big glass cookie jars for the guests to help themselves to.

If you can’t decide, then make up a “Wedding Bakery” and on a large table present a selection of cupcakes, macaroons, cookies, cake pops, and a small wedding cake (for the tradition of the bride and groom to cut and keep). On the side have napkins and treat boxes and bags (just in case some guests have to leave early) for the guests to select and store their cake treats in to nibble on and take home afterwards. To fill it out more, include some jars of marshmallows and caramel kisses. A bright “Wedding Bakery” will capture the attention of your guests when they walk into the reception and will remain a talking point after the day. The other good thing is your friends and family could help you out with it – have one person in charge of making the cupcakes, another in charge of cake pops (like I said, they are really easy to make!) and it also adds a personal touch to the overall wedding, knowing that the cake or cakes were made by a loved one just for you.

For more ideas on cakes and cookies check out Australia’s #1 Wedding Shop. The most recent being a photo of mini cakes made up to look like “Sliders” – mini burgers, and they look incredible!
