Ideas for Hosting a Modern & Personalised Christening

I’ll fess up now, we are yet to have our children christened. With Tilly being five and Mish just shy of his 3rd birthday now we have been trying to fit schedules and stay put in one place to actually get the family together. It does not help that my family all move about with their jobs (ADF) and ourselves being an ADF family and bouncing between states and my hubby’s parents live overseas! We have wanted to have as many of our family and friends there for it, and it is important for our parents to be present but the situation is such we may just have to bite the bullet and go ahead with it and just send everyone the photos.

A christening is a wonderful celebration as your child or children are welcomed into the church. It is important for the parents, God-parents and it is the children’s day. Typically a christening is organised whilst the child is still an infant, they are dressed in a beautiful white christening gown and the whole ceremony (in a church) is very formal, set in tradition. Often church christenings are conducted on the weekend and it is done in a group, but you can organise your own private ceremony. Some churches may be more flexible and can conduct the ceremony outside of a church or if you don’t want to go with the church, a naming day ceremony is similar and can be held in any location and can be as open or intimate as you like.

Back to the church christening though, the ceremony is one that you cannot alter. You can’t jazz it up to suit your tastes. It is something that you follow and it is the party afterwards that you can personalise. You can have a modern take on an old tradition. You can make like a New Jersey Housewife and hold it at the Brownstone and have a family brawl but in such extravagance! Two years ago my husband and I attended a Catholic christening – it was his cousin’s daughter. I will admit I spent the hour and a half outside the church wrangling our then one and a half year old son, but I was able to watch the ceremony (or parts of) when walking past the entrance. After the christening and photos inside and outside the old Catholic church the family and friends all went back to Mike’s aunt’s house for the party. Out on the tables were cupcakes, sandwiches and other finger food. The big hit was the candy buffet they had set up with handmade lolly-pops stamped with the baby girl’s name and the date of her christening. A good time was had by all and those with children returned home high on a sugar rush!

I also noticed at the church that the other families that were there, some of them opted to not have the traditional white christening gown. Pretty little floral dresses and little trousers and Hawaiian print shirts (it is Townsville), added some colour to the whole pomp and ceremony. Invitations and thank you cards are another thing you can make your own. You don’t have to have everything stamped with a cross. There is a lovely range of modern christening invitations that you can choose from to send out to your loved ones. You can have a candy buffet for your party.

Pink Frosting can help you with christening decorations for your venue, brightening it up with pom poms, paper chains, bunting. You can have butterflies or buzzy bees, polka dots or stripes. Choose pink, blue, green or yellow colours, paper flowers with hanging doilies and a little wishing well for everyone to write their blessings for you child. For thank you gifts send your guests a beautiful photo of your baby on their christening day, they will love it.

Christenings are a time of joy and love, and if you are a gypsy traveller it is the starting foundations for Holy Communion and ultimately the wedding! Seriously though if you can get your family together for this momentous occasion, fill it to the brim with happiness and colour. If, like us the family schedule is a tad sketchy, then make it just for your own little family but still make it beautiful and true to whom you and your children are. Pink Frosting love Christenings and have selected beautiful pieces to help you make your child’s christening personal and with a modern twist.
