Who's Lookin' at You Kid? Hollywood Wedding Inspiration

8659.jpg

I’m a sucker for the old Hollywood movies. The way they dressed, the way it was innocent – not in your face overtly sexual. I recently discovered a classic movie called Harvey and developed a crush on Jimmy Stewart. He was just adorable! Romance of Old Hollywood – who doesn’t love it? The women were vixens, there was no such thing as botox, implants or lip fillers. The most any actress had done was a bottle of bleach on her hair. The men were men – dapper in their suits and slicked back hair. They lived glamorously and got married glamorously, and to this day their weddings hold a timeless chic look. It is a style that is still popular today with brides pulling together an Old Hollywood Style wedding.

Princess Grace of Monaco’s wedding. Stunning! She embodied beauty, grace, and style and sent brides into frenzy as they all wanted a wedding like hers. Liz Taylor is another bride who springs to mind. She was married eight times and she is apparently Kim Kardashian’s role model (explains a lot). I like Liz, I love her movies – Cleopatra of course being the ultimate favourite for me, but I don’t think I would have the stamina to churn through eight marriages. All the best to you Kim K! For me, the closest I have come to Old Hollywood was when I went to Singapore about 9 years ago and I found myself at the famous Raffles Hotel and after scoring myself a tour of the hotel I wound up at one of  Raffles bars - the Writers bar where the old Hollywood and Royalty would gather and enjoyed a Singapore Sling or two or three. I sat at the bar and placed my hands on it, blown away by the fact I was sitting at a place where the likes of Rudyard Kipling sat (and where he wrote), where Ava Gardner, Charlie Chaplain and many more sat and enjoyed a drink or two.

The type of Old Hollywood I am thinking of is 1940’s and inspired by the Raffles Hotel. So I will be over the top in ideas for this! For the bride a classic ivory or cream gown with lace, crystals and pearls. Her hair swept up in a classic chignon with finger waves. Vintage white gold jewellery – emeralds, rubies, diamonds! I LOVE jewellery!!! The groom in a dark pin stripe suit with a satin tie, suspenders, high shine shoes and a red rose pinned to his jacket and his hair slicked in that old Hollywood Heart Throb style! The wedding invites, place cards, menus printed to look like movie scripts.

The reception would be at an old historic hotel from that era – Art Deco from top to bottom and decked out in swathes of burgundy and cream fabrics, candles, crystals, chandeliers and roses. You could get swept up in the glamour, walk into your reception on a red carpet and at the end of it have your own Hollywood Star of Fame! Polished silverware and fine china, a five course meal with cocktails for the ladies and scotch for the gentlemen in the lounge. Adorn the wedding cake with feathers and sugar crystals. Name each table after a Hollywood Icon. The big band would be playing swing music and fireworks to end the party.

Despite my ramblings of fantasy you don’t have to spend your life savings (or your parent’s life savings) to pull off a wedding fit for Hollywood Royalty. Half the fun of a wedding is being clever and creative. Put your photos and videos together in black and white and play it to a love song from one of the classic Hollywood movies. Instead of the Big Band, organise a few CD’s of old classics for the DJ to play instead. Opt for sparklers instead of fireworks. Can’t find an Art Deco reception venue? Then just tailor your choice of fabrics and table settings to work the look instead. You have to know what you want and where to look and Pink Frosting have a gorgeous range of vintage/old Hollywood wedding products. If you want the Old Hollywood feel of Singapore, then look up the Raffles Hotel for tips and ideas. I fell in love with the place (there is something about Art Deco that fascinates me) and Pink Frosting totally have the right products to put this look together!  Try these:
