Great Outdoor Games to Play at Kids Parties

sackrace.jpg

Kids love running around in the outdoors and particularly for older kids - five to twelve years of age - an outdoor party is alot more fun than being stuck inside.  Think pool parties, barbecues in your backyard, picnics and parties in the park.  This is much more relaxing for the parents and much more fun for the kids.  If you do decide on an outdoor venue for your party, then here are some great ideas for outdoor games to play.

Sack Race or Three Legged Race

An oldie but a goodie!  For the sack race, grab some old pillow cases or hession sacks and get the kids to jump from one end of the course to the other.  The winner is the child who gets to the finish line first.  For the three legged race, get the kids to grab a partner and tie their middle leg together with some ribbon or rope (gently please!) and they need to get from one end of the course to the other.  Both of these races are really fun and always end up with heaps of laughs.

Scavenger Hunt

Scavenger hunts are a wonderful game to play at kids parties.  Remember that if the kids are quite little and can't read well, they will need older kids with them or adult support.  The idea is to hide lots of themed objects around the hunting ground and ask the kids to find them within a certain timeframe.  You could have the kids work in teams or pairs or individually.  It's easy to theme this game - for a pirate party you might hide all sorts of great gold treasure and for a fairy hunt you might hide pretty sparkling fairy wands and jewellery.  The kids with the most "treasure" at the end of the game are the winners.

Obstacle Course

Creating a fun obstacle course in your backyard is much easier than you might think!  You can use garden hoses, cardboard boxes, outdoor chairs and tables, brooms and rakes for kids to jump over, buckets to hop through.... A little imagination can go a long way!  Make sure you create a fun but safe course for the kids and that they play one at a time so as not to hurt one another.  The child who completes the course the quickest is the winner.

Water Relay

One of our favourite outdoor party games is the water relay!  There are plenty of ways to play this one.  You'll need some big clear jugs or buckets, some big car washing sponges and big buckets of water.  The object of the game is for the kids to get into teams and start with the buckets of water - immerse the sponge into the bucket and run it to the jug at the other end, emptying as much water into the jugs as possible.  The team that fills the jug first is the winner of this game.

Egg and Spoon Race

Another traditional kids party game, this one is always a big laugh for the kids and adults!  Racers take an egg (unboiled please!) on a spoon and have to race to the end of the course without dropping it.  This messy game is just brilliant fun and the kids will love to watch their parents have a go too.  Don't forget some towels and wipes just in case some eggs get broken!

You can find some fun party game prizes and party favours to buy at Pink Frosting's online party shop to help you have a really fun outdoor party!
