Great Ideas for Australia Day Parties

australia_day_centrepiece_a_small.jpg

Okay so the  Pink Frosting girls are getting ready to celebrate Australia Day and these girls definitely know how to party! One of the perks for writing for Australia's #1 Party Shop is things like receiving the e-mail of Australia Day cocktail ideas of which I was only too happy to try! Australia Day is a day for Aussies to celebrate our Lucky Country and being Australian. We flock to beaches, back yards, parks and everything is barbecued. The long weekend allows time for sunburns to cool down and bellies to digest burnt sausages and the gallons of tomato sauce consumed. For ideas party menus and cocktails can help out with a great recipe for lamingtons – a staple in the Australian diet.

The girls at  Pink Frosting have put a twist on two cocktails, keeping in the theme of Aussie, Aussie, Aussie treat the grown-ups with

Aussie Thong (Japanese Slipper) – Green & Gold cocktail

What you need:

1x Cocktail shaker, half filled with ice

1x Martini shaped glass

30ml of Midori

30ml of Cointreau/ Triple Sec

15ml of Lime/ Lemon juice

1x Wedge of Pineapple to garnish the glass

 How to:

Add handful of ice to shaker, add Midori, Cointreau and the lime juice together. Shaker well for 30 seconds. Using strainer, pour into glass and serve garnished with pineapple splice on the side.

Aussie Flag Cocktail – Blue, Red and White Cocktail

What you need:

1x Hurricane tumbler glass with ice

30-50ml of Blue Cacao

Lemonade to fill

30-50ml of Raspberry Cordial/ Grenadine

1x Teaspoon

How to:

Pour all ice into the tumbler, then fill with Blue Cacao liqueur. Tilt glass 45 degrees on its side and fill with lemonade slowly. This is done to not muddle to the blue and clear mixture. Bring glass upright again and insert backside teaspoon into the liqueur.Gently pour the Cordial/ Grenadine liquid onto the top of the lemonade to form a red layer on top. This sound create 3 layers of colour, blue then clear then red.

Sounds good right? Well they are! So with the drinks and food sorted; now what is on the list to putting together a great Australia Day party? Homes all over will be polishing and prepping their barbecues, dragging out the Tupperware salad bowls and eskies, inflating the pool toys and setting up the backyards and beaches to become cricket grounds. Deckchairs, beach towels and sunscreen fly off the shelves as we all make an effort to be more sun smart this year. Backyard cricket is a tradition but also add in some other games like pin the Ford/Holden on the town – set up a big map of Australia and have your guests blindfolded and trying to pin their car on the town/city of choice. Aussie trivia games can be fun too. Name your tables after iconic Australian places and people. Also Australia Day is not complete without a Cold Chisel and ACDC karaoke match!

For green and gold colours and Aussie Flag decorations  Pink Frosting have all you need with Australia Day cups, plates, flags, napkins. With the hot sun sure to make its presence known on the day (although here in Brisbane it looks like the rainy weather is digging it’s heels in), try decorating umbrellas and parasols with the Aussie Flag bunting. So if you are heading out to one of the many Australia Day celebrations that will be taking place or organising your own party, gather up your Aussie pride, serve up snags and shrimp on Aussie Flag plates, fill the Aussie Flag cups with cordial, add a paddle pop stick and freeze – frozen cordial cups a sure hit with kids and grown-ups! For the kids, set up some kids party games and by the end you will all be worn out from a great day of Aussie fun. Oh and bags not having to clean the barbecue!!!
