Fun at the Fair Party Ideas

The other night my husband and I were busy working out our plan to head over to Canada later this year for his little sister’s wedding in Toronto. This will be our daughter’s second trip overseas, but the first for our son and at their ages we are contemplating a stopover in Los Angeles to visit the Happiest Place on Earth – Disney Land. Mike has been to LA before and was flicking through brochures and talking about where he went and what places he thought would be good to take the kids to. He mentioned Santa Monica Pier with the carnival rides and sideshows and it made me think back to our wedding. We didn’t have time for a honeymoon, we were back at work three days after saying “I Do”, but we did squeeze in two of those days in Sydney city, shopping and relaxing. That night we decided to live a little and check out Luna Park (it was at Luna Park where my mum’s parents met and fell in love).

It was the best night out – zooming down the slides on hessian sacks, throwing balls at clown’s heads, laughing at ourselves in the warped mirrors and trying to run through the spinning tunnel. We ended the night with a trip on the Ferris wheel with views of the city, it was perfect. We staggered back to our hotel with cheesy photo booth photos, and other mementos from the gift shop. We totally should have had our wedding there! A fair ground theme to your wedding would be a memorable one for you and your guests. You don’t have to have the big rides and slides, but you can use inspiration from the old-style carnivals to turn your wedding into a bright, fun and lovely event. If you do have the space at the reception (outdoors) and budget permitting you could maybe add something like a jumping castle, inflatable slide, jousting ring, or a bucking bull.

Decorate the area with streamers, bunting, fairy lights (not only around the room but along the bridal table, under a white tablecloth) and paper lanterns in various shapes, sizes and colours. Display vintage fair ground posters around the room on easels. Have a balloon stand near the entrance and as the guests arrive, they are each given a bright coloured balloon and party popper. Use bright table cloths of pink, blue, green, red, yellow, orange, gold and black. For the table centrepieces make your own with Styrofoam ball/block in which you set a bouquet of little balloons and party pin wheels. Place inside these gorgeous mosaic vases – new from Pink Frosting. Seeing them glitter and sparkle on the tables will delight the guests for sure! For extra sparkle add a few tea lights around each centrepiece. Have a photo booth backdrop for the guests to “clown around” in front of, with accessories like feather boas, fans, parasols, clown wigs, balloons, streamers and confetti. Get the photographer (can even be a family volunteer job) to take the photo booth photos using a polaroid camera or a digital camera that is compatible with the Instagram application – instagram pics look great and are so popular now.

For the menu incorporate fair ground delights like popcorn, dagwood dogs and hot chips/wedges served with sauce and sour cream. You could have these as the appetizers as the guests mingle pre-reception for the newlyweds to arrive. Have slushy and fairy floss machine set up for the guests to wander over and load up on sugar. Set up a sideshow alley where the guests can have a potato sack race, play ring toss, bob for apples, boat races (paper boats the guests make and then race in a little pool using a straw to blow them along to the finish line), line up some inflatable ball toss games to keep them busy in between meal courses and speeches or for those not keen on cutting a figure out on the dance floor. Oh! Why not have fortune tellers there or a fire twirler (outdoors of course!)

At the end of the night, farewell the newlyweds with sparklers lit and waving (great for photos!) and have your guests collect their “show bags” filled with candy, swirl lollipops, cupcakes and keepsakes like ribbon wands, gumball machines, chocolate freckles. Australia’s #1 Party Shop can help you put together a unique flair, fun fair wedding that you and your guests will love.
