Formal Wedding Cake Ideas
The wedding cake is almost as iconic a wedding symbol as the bride's dress, so many couples choose a formal wedding cake to decorate their wedding reception and as an enhancement of their wedding day. A formal wedding cake is typically layered and structured. It generally includes intricately designed frosting and may include flowers or other embellishments. If you have decided on a formal wedding cake for your reception, here are some ideas you may wish to incorporate.
Incorporate details from the wedding gown on the cake - Expert cake designers can take a piece of material or an embellishment from the bride's gown and incorporate this into the cake to create a formality and cohesion to the wedding festivities. You might choose a bow, a buckle, the beading from the gown or the lace and ask the designer to take this as inspiration for the cake's decorations.
Use fruit as an ornament - One of our favourite wedding cake ideas is to decorate with fruit. Delicious and striking choices include berries and citrus fruit layered between the cake's tiers. Summer berries and freshly picked vine fruits complement formal garden and vineyard celebrations, and citrus fruits look beautiful for winter and autumn themed weddings.
Fresh flowers take the cake - Formal wedding embellishments can include fresh flowers that match your wedding bouquet and reception decorations to perfection. Have your florist work with your cake designer on the flowers that you will be using on the day to create a cake studded with fresh flowers that really become the centrepiece for your wedding reception.
Start with a plain white base - Fondant makes the most formal cakes look more formal. Start with a plain white base of fondant and your designer can create almost any look from there. For a beach look, add starfish and created shells in sugar fondant. For a garden look, add fondant flowers. Use white on white for a chic effect that by no means has to be plain.
Formal cakes don't need to be fruit - Don't mistake formal for traditional. You can play up your sophistication and modernity with a cake that is chocolate or coloured and has almost any wedding cake flavour as a base. A towering chocolate cake is just as formal if it has contemporary lines.
Pastels make a comeback - Pastel hues in wedding cakes are very popular right now and moreso in formal wedding cakes. Take a soft buttery lemon, a baby blue, blushing pink or barely there green and you have a formal colour scheme to match your cake to your wedding gown and bridesmaid dresses.
Towering to the sky - You'll make the decision about how large your cake will be depending on your budget and guests. Generally, the more formal, the more tiers your cake will have, but this rule isn't necessarily true. A beautiful formal cake can also have a wider diameter to serve more guests and keep to a more traditional three or four tiers.
Presentation is key - As with every aspect of your wedding decorations, think about this feature and how it works with the rest of your wedding scheme. The cake is central to your reception decorations, so if you choose a formal cake, also consider how it will be presented. Will it sit on a small table by itself, or will you have it presented on a dessert table. What sort of wedding decorations will you include on the wedding cake table? Consider personalised table cloths and runners, lanterns and centrepieces which work with the theme and colour scheme of your wedding cake.
Cake toppers finish the cake - Stunning wedding cake toppers can take a plain formal cake and make it very special indeed. Take some monogram crystal cake letters, couture cake hearts or bride and groom figurines (oh these are so much more stylish than every before) and you can transform an ordinary cake into something extraordinary.
