Favourite Kids Christmas Songs

If there’s one thing we know about kids, whether or not you are a parent, it’s that kids love to sing. That is why the vast majority of films marketed towards children are musicals, and why Disney has its own pool of recording artists. Remember Hannah Montana? And Christmas songs are no different. Kids want to join in with the carolling, but not all Christmas songs are appropriate for children. Some of the more famous ones have words in them that not even the average adult knows the definition of, and just try getting a five-year-old to say Good King Wenceslas without tripping over their tongue a few times. That’s why we’ve compiled a list of songs that are fun and easy for you to sing with your kids this Christmas.

Jingle Bells

As a child, this is probably the first Christmas carol you learnt. It is great fun for the whole family to sing along to. It’s jubilant, captures the Christmas spirit, and if the original gets boring and your kids are the right age, you can substitute it for “Jingle Bells, Batman smells”, which always gets a laugh out of the little ones.

Rudolf the Red-nosed Reindeer

Who doesn’t love a story with a moral? This ditty tells the tale of a little reindeer who stuck out from the pack because his nose was a different colour, but in the end the colour of his nose came in handy. Christmas song or euphemism for racism? We’ll let you decide how political you want to get with your kids.

We Wish You a Merry Christmas

The great thing about Christmas songs composed for children is their simplicity. This one for example is rather repetitive with the lyrics and simple with the tune, making it really easy for kids to learn. And if you want to go the extra step and teach them to play it on the piano, that would be a rewarding exercise.

Were Three Kings

This Christmas song is one of those rare ones that is equally appealing to both adults and children. The children find it fun to sing and the parents appreciate the variation of the tune. Plus, it’s got the added bonus of having nostalgia factor for any parent who ever performed in a nativity play.

All I Want For Christmas (Is My Two Front Teeth)

A Christmas song that was written especially for six to seven year olds! If you’re a parent of a child this age, don’t let this Christmas pass you by without teaching you child this little number. They will feel super special and think it was written just for them, which it kind of was.

Away In a Manger

One of the things that appeals most to children about Christmas is the fact that it’s a story about a baby, and the love his parents had for him. They will appreciate this song because it speaks of the actual birth of Christ and the fact that he was a baby, just like they were.
