Easy Dinner Party Ideas

The next time you throw a dinner party, try one of these fresh, simple ideas to shake things up a bit!

Nice Nibbles

The wine starts flowing and the conversation takes off as the appetizers arrive. Everyone enjoys hors d’oeuvres. Next time you throw a dinner party, place a couple of silver cupcake stands along the table and fill each platform with canapés and crostini - the nibbles will be easy to reach and will look fantastic in an elegant tower display.

Grown-Up Goodie Bags

Ah, childhood - remember how much you looked forward to receiving a goodie bag filled with delicious treats at the end of a party? Next time you throw a fancy dinner, create some sophisticated little gift boxes to give to your guests as they leave. Grab some black, white or dark pink window bomboniere boxes and fill with your treat of choice - dark chocolates, divine macaroons, delicious shortcake... Your guests will look forward to another dinner at your place!

Simple Centrepiece

If your dinner party is set on the balcony with the sunset in the background and the stars starting to twinkle above, create a truly luscious table centrepiece with some tropical hibiscus flowers. Half-fill a glass floating candle bowl with water and let some faux hibiscus flowers float on top. A bright and beautiful centrepiece - the perfect complement to a warm night.

Just A Trifle Divine

For a funky dessert, use some carnival stripe paper baking cups to create individual trifles, with layers of sponge, jelly, custard and cream. Or, grab some black and white paper baking cups and create mini mousses with chocolate cream and edible sugar pearls on top. The fun miniature portions are perfect for devouring whilst sipping coffee towards the end of the night. Also, there’s less dishes to wash later on - bonus!

Cue Conversation

There’s nothing worse than awkward silence at the dinner table. If you have guests who don’t know each other, or who don’t have much in common, awkward silence can be all too deafening. Try this: at the start of the night, as you hand each guest a drink, give them a piece of paper and a pen and ask them to come up with a topic of conversation. Pop all papers into a brandy balloon vase and pass the vase around the table during the meal. All topics will be anonymous, and each guest can take turns pulling one out and reading it aloud. Some might be clever, some might be intriguing, or some might be simply silly! Awkward silence - successfully averted.

Twinkling Tealights

Decorative candles cast such a soft, relaxing light - they should always be used at a dinner party. They are the easiest way to add a touch of glamour. Choose a few glass tealight holders in shades of deep pink or bright aqua for a funky twist. Or, for something cute, use some chalkboard frosted glass tealight holders. Scatter a few pieces of chalk around the table and wait - which guests will leave you little messages at the end of the night?
