Cooking Birthday Party Ideas

So you have a party to plan and host for a soon to be seven year old and are wondering what you can do to keep the kids fed, happy and entertained? I have an idea that will require a bit of prep work, but totally worth it in the end. Inspired by cooking shows that are on at the moment – My Kitchen Rules on Channel 7 and Master Chef on the Lifestyle Food channels, why not host a birthday party where the kids can help prepare the party menu? Like I said, prep work will be required in doing most of the cutting, and plating up the range of ingredients. You could make the whole menu one for the kids to cook, or select one or two things for them to whip up.

Food that can be cooked on the barbecue grill or toasted under a grill are the best options as they can be easily prepared by little hands and cooked by the grown-ups and the cooking time is minimal (we all know how impatient kids can get – my five year old will sit and watch the cupcakes rise in the oven. She sings to them, thinking it will help). So have bowls set out containing all the ingredients, a long table for them to gather around at their seats and they can set about making their own party meal. Bonus for this too is the kids will eat what they make because they make it and cook it – so perfect opportunity to add in veggies and fruit and make it healthy!

For the menu why not have kebabs with options of beef, chicken, lamb pieces, capsicum, celery, pineapple, mango zucchini chunks for them to thread on skewers (already softened in water with the tips slightly snipped to make them less pointy). Pita bread pizzas are a favourite in this household and would no doubt prove popular with your seven year old and his or her friends. Let them spoon on the pizza sauce base and then add toppings of their choice like shaved ham, pepperoni, salami, cheese, cherry tomato, mushrooms, olives, onion. Mini rissoles are also a tasty party treat. Let them combine in a small bowl mince, egg, onion, salt, pepper, dash of olive oil, capsicum and carrot then roll it into mini balls and take up to the barbecue for the grown up to cook for them. Have a fruit bucket set up for them to pick from and help them make up their own mini fruit salad (served in cute portion cups). To help keep them busy during the cooking time, set up a games area where they can enjoy a potato sack race, pin the tail on the donkey, pass the parcel (in which you can have those cute mini cooking utencils such as whisks and spatulas as the prizes), charades and twister.

Australia’s #1 Party Shop has a glorious new range of cake and treat decorations (edible and pretty!) so why not have a dessert decoration station? Have the kids decorate their ice creams, mousse, jelly and cupcakes how they like? Have a selection of edible decorations, the ready to use frosting, fairy floss, popcorn, candy available for them to line up and take turns at decorating their desserts and cupcakes. Make a really cool Topsy Turvy birthday cake (from the Australian’s Women’s Weekly More Kids’ Cakes book). They will LOVE it! Just look at the dessert bar at Sizzlers. The times I have gone there, all the kids (and dads) eyes are on that dessert bar and as soon as they have finished dinner they are all over the soft serve machine and chocolate mousse and jelly set up. It would be a fantastic option for the kids. They will end up heading home proud and excited that they were able to make some yummy food and really yummy treats.

So set up your “My Party Rules” or “Master Party Chef” theme party for your seven year old and watch the kids take great delight in creating and cooking their masterpieces. Why not let them cook a bit extra for them to take home and share with their family? Pink Frosting has all the necessary products to help you set up your cooking themed party – from portion cups to the edible cake decorations and sweets and venue decorations, cutlery and crockery.
