Christmas in July Ideas

christmasbaubles.jpg

The year was 1980; the location was the Blue Mountains. A group of people had found a place in Australia that had similar winter weather to the weather of their home country – Ireland. As they sat with the host and owner of Mountain Heritage, Garry Crockett warming themselves in front of an open log fire, they began to tell him how Australian Christmas is just not the same or as nice as the Christmas back in Ireland. As Garry listened he began to form an idea and that idea was Christmas in July (known as Yulefest!).

Garry recreated a winter Christmas for his Irish guests and the event has continued ever since. Christmas in July only really applies to the southern parts of Australia where winters are cold and grey. It is their opportunity to experience a white or semi-white wedding. If you live in a location that gets snow in winter, awesome. If you live in an area where it is chilly, as long as you can set up the heater or the fireplace, you can have your own Christmas in July party. Get your guests over to experience a wintery wonderland, where Santa won’t swelter in his jolly suit of plush red velvet and wool. Enjoy a Christmas roast dinner and fruit cake with warm custard. Break out the Christmas carols and if you are particularly into the festive spirit make little gifts for your guests. Another way you can look at it is that you can justify buying and making really flash and fancy decorations because they will be used TWICE a year as opposed to just the one time in December.

Decorate your home in red and green. Set the dinner table with a white table cloth, red table runner, candles and centre piece a hurricane vase filled with pinecones and set in a boxwood wreath. Linen napkins, tin pails filled with red and white and green and white and red lollipops. Place cards – snowflake ornaments. For the kids table, the vintage Christmas table cloth. Serve up your mince pies on a fancy platter, with jars of Christmas tree and reindeer cookies. Cupcake stands filled with Christmas wrapped cupcakes. Decorate the room with red and gold baubles, paper chains, candles and snowflake scatters.

As your guests arrive, have them collect their little booklet of Christmas Carols. Have the egg nog at the ready, the fireplace going and against the chill of the July winter night, and make like the Irish guests in the Blue Mountains with a “traditional” winter Christmas that you and your guests will enjoy and look forward to every winter. The best part about it all? For your Christmas decorations you don’t have to venture far to the Christmas warehouses or wait until November when the shops set out their decorations for sale. Make the most out of your dreary cold winter and end of financial year sales. You can organise your Christmas in July by simply logging on to Pink Frosting who have more decorations than Santa’s workshop! From table decorations to party favours and menu ideas, everything is there to help you create a wonderful and warm Christmas in July for your nearest and dearest. Now I wish I lived down south again!
