Canberra New Years Eve Ideas

Attention Mr Speaker! Mr Speaker! The Minister for Parties and All Things Fun would like to discuss NYE celebrations for Australia.

That is what I would be should I be elected to parliament – The Minister for Parties and All Things Fun (party on Wayne! Party on Garth!) My political party would be the Party Party. I would be jumping up and down in the senate only too happy to talk about upcoming events and what is on trend in entertaining friends and family, the dos and don’ts of hosting a party etc. Everywhere countries light up at midnight to mark in the New Year and each city has to be prepared to make sure it all goes off without a hitch. I love it and in the past attended some great NYE parties. I’ve rushed in to a party just in time after finishing work at 1130pm, screaming (not literally screaming, although I was excited to be going to the party, I wasn’t that excited) home to get changed, attend the party; have a shuffle on the dance floor and then watch the sky light up with bursts of colour. I have donned a blue wig and dramatic makeup and spent the night in the company of fantastic friends, family and their pet cats waiting for midnight to roll around with glasses of wine and feather boas at the ready.

I have only experienced one New Years’ overseas. That was in Canada. At the time I was coming up to 3 months with my first pregnancy and the morning sickness was just brutal. For the month that we were in Canada I could only drink weak cups of tea and eat apples. Of a morning I would open the back door and stick my head out into the cold air to quell the nausea and in doing so I befriended a wonderful little squirrel who I named Vegemite. The smell of cinnamon and roast turkey had me running for the nearest bathroom. Every time we went to the mall, we would have to avoid the Cinnabon store (full of cinnamon cakes and treats) as the smell would send me off gagging like a cat with a fur ball and it wasn’t going to be pretty! Christmas Eve roasting that turkey, I was upstairs in bed, nursing a bucket and rubbing vicks under my nose. I even tried to plug the gap under the bedroom door with a towel to stop the smell. Just brutal!

Therefore as NYE approached my husband and I decided it would be better to spend New Year’s at his parents’ house where we watched Deuce Bigalow 2 and giggled at Mike’s dad who dozed off on the couch and he had a twitchy leg (sorry Ed, but your wife was timing each flinch and was laughing so hard, we ended up watching you instead! From memory you would ‘karate kick’ once every 20 seconds. It was hilarious!). We caught the party in Toronto on the television and with the snow about, it just looked spectacular. One day we will go back and I will be in Toronto, in the snow and counting down to midnight for sure!

Let’s start in Australia’s Capital Territory – Canberra because like Canada it is freezing cold in winter. It is not all parliament sittings and politicians waffling on about this and that, well at least not all year anyway. Canberra is gearing up to stage its NYE bash and for those heading to Canberra for the holiday season, you may just want to join in! This year you can go to Civic Square for a more family orientated party which starts at 7pm and for the kiddies has an earlier firework display at 9pm. Live music, headlined by Ian Moss will entertain the crowd with the whole event just good, clean wholesome family fun. For the grown-ups, you might want to check out Garema Place in the city for more of a dance party. A collection of top DJ’s will mix beats and whip up a frenzy in the lead up to the midnight fireworks. Both events are free and are also no go zones for alcohol. Public transport will be available on the night and these details can be found at the website attached.

I am soon heading down to Canberra to meet the Pink Frosting team and I can’t wait to see what the place is like in the summer time. Who knows I may return home with the role of Minister for Parties and All Things Fun?

If you're hosting a New Years Eve party at your place, deck it out with the stylish New Years Eve Party decorations from Pink Frosting.
