Cake - Nom, Nom, Nom!

The world of cakes has come a long way from the humble sponge and Pavlova. Now cake decorating is becoming a popular hobby and art form with people trying their hand at being the next Cake Boss, baking cakes and decorating in a frenzy to create food so pretty you feel guilty cutting off a slice and eating it! Not all of us though are as skilled in making a cake bust of the birthday boy/girl, I’m lucky if my cupcakes look like cupcakes! I kid you not, for both our kids first birthdays, our attempt at gourmet extravagance ended in giggles, confusion and photographic evidence.

For Matilda we had the genius in theory, disastrous in application idea of coating her cake in melted white chocolate. It was the first cake we made, and it was important to us to make the cake for our baby girl. The chocolate would cool and harden quickly so to stop crumbing the cake, we applied more and more chocolate, finished off with edible glitter and sparkles. The fact we had to hammer in the candle should have told us to turn tail and run to the bakery. We presented the cake proudly to our family and friends and everyone received a piece of chipped off white chocolate with a crumb of sponge cake. Our guests were quiet, we thought they were enjoying the cake – no they had to gnaw through an inch and a half of white chocolate to get to the cake.

Our son’s first birthday we steered clear of chocolate for icing. Instead I over whipped the butter icing and turned what was supposed to be a blue, red and yellow number 1 cake into something that looked like Superman had melted onto a plate. Kids didn’t mind melted icing running down their little hands and the grown-ups got in on it too and we all sported bright blue teeth for the next few days. Since then I have opted for professional cakes and in the meantime practice away on perfecting my own skills (or lack of).

I admire my friend’s skills in putting together dragon, fairy house, train station, turtle cakes. I wish I could do that. Instead I rely on edible decorations to add some pizazz to my cakes. I slather on the icing a-la Donna Hay style and then pimp it out with pretty jewels, glitter and candles. Smoke and mirrors – no one will notice if the cake was meant to resemble a numeral, they will be more interested in the added touches.

For those blessed with the gift of baking, to embellish your art you need the finest quality in cake decorations and of course Australia's #1 Party Shop Pink Frosting has just the material you are looking for to give the likes of DC Cupcakes and Planet Cake cause to shake in their aprons!

I am fascinated by the edible glitter that is now out and the range of colours far exceeds the basic primary colour droppers you buy in the supermarket. No more having to mix until you reach the right colour, it is already there for you. Candles too cute to hold a flame to and paper wraps and stands for your cupcakes in all sorts of colours and patterns. It does not matter if you are the next baking genius or someone like me who has next to know idea, you cannot go wrong with your cake creations with some help from Pink Frosting's cake decorations.
