Bang on Trend - Wedding Dresses 2012
When it comes to your wedding dress you want to set yourself apart from the rest. Some businesses like Filene’s Basement hold their annual Running of the Brides – where Brides push and shove to secure the ultimate dress for an amazing bargain. Some brides want what is ‘so hot right now’ and will scour bridal stores and the internet to find the dress of their dreams. If you are super fashion savvy, you may buy your gown from overseas (like USA) where their fashion is six months ahead of Australia thus making sure you have something no one else will have (pretty clever!). Plus at the moment the Aussie dollar is doing pretty well up against the US dollar so now would be the time to snap up a designer deal.
Around the time that I got married, other brides around me were going for the ball gown which is what I also liked (for the time of year, weather and co-ordination with hubby’s uniform). A fellow work colleague wore a beautiful big gown that had black embroidery down the front – it looked beautiful and it was her wedding photos that inspired me in my quest to find my dress. I set about trawling through shops; I am a lover not a fighter and I don’t think I would fare too well in a Bridezilla scrum over a wedding gown. That’s just not how I roll! It is always important to pick something that will not date and in years to come you won’t cringe when you look at your wedding photos. No woman should look back on her wedding and think “I wore that?” Unless you happen to be Carrie Bradshaw then the decision to stick a bird to your head for your wedding is just a normal day for you.
So, to help with the countless trips through bridal stores to try on gowns, buying every single wedding publication from the newsagency and having a meltdown about “What if I just can’t find that one dress”, please take a deep breath! It is going to be okay. If your wedding is tomorrow and you have not found your dress, then yes panic. I have met many women who have purchased their dresses from on-line and in particular from America. But if you have heaps of time to allow for the search and potentially having your dress designed and made then let’s have a sneak peak at what is around the corner for 2012…
Martha Stewart’s Wedding web site is just one site that has the latest 2012 Spring and Fall collections covered. With designers like Vera Wang, Marchesa, Oscar de la Renta, Isaac Mizrahi, Carolina Herrera, Monique Lhuillier and Aussie lad Henry Roth, all once again putting together collections nothing short of spectacular and of course on trend. Next year sees ultra-feminine, flowing, soft embroidery and prints, fluffy ‘feathers’ and simple classic gowns set to grace the wedding aisles. For spring, Vera Wang adds a soft coloured waist ribbon to her gowns of lace and embroidered patterns. Oscar once again excels in his craft – I cannot pick one favourite from his collection although the sheath dress would only be for the brave indeed! He even has a white wedding tuxedo for the blushing bride!
Think Princess when you look through the Carolina Herrera collection – whimsical and soft they are dresses fairy tales are made of! (was she not the designer pick for Bella Swan’s wedding gown?)...Oh my goodness! What just happened? One minute I was looking at Marchesa’s spring 2012 collection and the next I wake up in my husband’s arms, being fanned and murmuring “I want that one! Can I just try it on?” Do I dare look again? I realised I was holding my breath; the collection is to die for.
Monique Luihllier makes brides look like flurries of snow – all soft and billowy in ball gowns and A-line dresses with layers and lace. Dreamy.
Australian bridal designer Henry Roth who is based in New York has a divine Fall 2012 collection. Lace, diamante’s, crystals, frills and ruffles – I loved watching him mentor on Project Runway Australia, his eye for detail is impeccable, truly.
My dear Brides’ this is one tough job, but one I will do it for you if it whets your appetite and sets you on the path to finding your dress. Yes, the dresses I am currently worshipping are quite pricey, but you can always find a great dress maker who can be your Fairy Godmother and make your gown come to life. Or you could win the lotto and in that case, buy up big!
To compliment your gown, Pink Frosting stock beautiful wedding veils and bouquet jewellery to add that designer sparkle and shine, worthy of a twirl down the cat walk and be immortalised in photos and video.
