Autumn Wedding Ideas

I love autumn. It has to be my favourite season. The searing heat of summer ebbs away for a gentle warmth and crisp cool mornings and evenings. The outside world appears to have received Midas’ touch, as everything basks in a golden glow. Leaves turn from green to shades of yellow, red, orange and brown making the trees “blaze” as winter lurks around the corner. In Sydney I used to take the kids for a stroll around our suburb, my daughter loved to run up and leap into a big pile of crunchy golden brown and red leaves. In the crisp air you could smell the fire as homes lit up their fire places to keep toasty. It is the perfect in between of the scorching dry heat of our summer and the bitter cold of winter. Here in Townsville we have two seasons – Wet and Dry. There is no autumn here and writing about Sydney is making me a touch homesick. The colours, the smell and the sensations of the cool air brushing against my face during my early morning walk crunching through the fallen leaves, the cinnamon toast for breakfast – perfect.

It is also the perfect time for a wedding. The guests and bridal party will find the climate agreeable as they will not be too hot or too cold, being comfortable for the entire event. For the bride you can still opt for the lighter styles of wedding gowns in cream or ivory and add a bit of faux fur trimming to a cape or Stoll. Put on a pair of dainty gloves and ooze elegance. For the bridesmaids choose colours like gold, red or olive green gowns, the ceremony and reception awash with rich and vivid warm tones to keep the guests cosy against the slight chill of the evenings. An autumn ceremony I envisage white chairs and white tulle with flourishes of rustic colours with flecks of gold. But all kept to a minimum. The reception well, I have heaps of ideas. From an outdoor, under the stars reception where the bonfire keeps the heat going to an elegant ballroom or function room that is illuminated with dim candle light playing with the gold. For the outdoor venue, rustic wooden tables and chairs for the guests, no tablecloths but the centre piece of each table being a little bouquet of flowers (roses, zinnia, iris, camellia bloom for example) and seasonal fruit. White crockery and gold cutlery, tea lights around the centrepieces and gold wedding kissing bells for the place cards. Light the open dance floor surrounded by candles and scattered rose petals and have a string quartet play for the first dance. Of course with any outdoor wedding a wet weather option has to be in place and you could easily transfer your outdoor autumn reception into an indoor venue too (no bonfire!).

An indoor autumn reception; decorate the surrounding walls with swathes of chocolate coloured fabric to give the room a more intimate feel. Soft lighting will look beautiful against this backdrop. Cream or ivory tablecloths cover tables set with vases filled with bunches of orange and yellow roses tied up in gold ribbon, tea lights and gold trimmings like the little gold chair favour boxes. Cut the cake with a beautiful cake serving set and toast the newlywed couple with champagne topped with a strawberry, sipped from Parisian Gold champagne flutes. Add a personal touch to the dance floor too!

In my opinion I think the most beautiful places to hold an autumn wedding would be in the hinterland – vineyards or little rustic towns like Bowral (bit biased as that was where we were married). Wedding photos of the bride and groom jumping together into a pile of autumn leaves would be such a cute photo to have. Remember that it is a time of year that is not too hot and not too cold, the golden glow and blaze of leaves is really such a pretty sight to behold. Australia’s #1 Wedding Shop has your autumn wedding decorations covered with all the necessary items to make your wedding warm, inviting and the perfect hurrah before winter - oh and autumn works well in that for your honeymoon, our autumn is spring overseas so you could head over yonder in the warmer climes for your honeymoon as opposed to a summer wedding here and a winter honeymoon overseas. There! Have I sold the autumn wedding to you? I hope so!
