Are You My Mother? Dr Seuss Baby Shower Inspiration

71314.jpg

Everywhere I look I see glowing mumma's with bellys at various stages of pregnancy. It is an amazing time in your life as you bake a bubby for the nine months. A wonderful tradition (and one I sadly missed out on with my pregnancies due to living so far away from my family and friends) is the Baby Shower. A celebration of baby bumps and mummy's to be that involves tasting baby food, nappy change races, a toilet paper maternity gown and guess which poop is that (smeared chocolate in diapers). Mums can share stories and secrets with first time expectant mums, enjoy food, fun and gifts with your nearest and dearest.

When it comes to hosting a baby shower you can really have some fun with the themes. You only have to look through the celebrity magazines to see the who's who of baby showers. A baby shower is more than pinks and blues. If you want to keep your baby's sex a secret, or if you yourself don't know, or you do know and just want something different then you can spice it up and have a Dr Seuss theme baby shower.

Everyone knows who Dr Seuss was - a popular children's author who wrote rhyming stories all with a moral to the tale. Some favourites are the Grinch Who Stole Christmas, Horton Hears a Who; for a baby shower this story is just beautiful. For those not familiar with the story Horton is a kind and gentle elephant from the Jungle of Noor who one day hears these little voices on a tiny speck. He learns that the Who's live on this speck and he sets out to find them a safe place to live. Throughout the story Horton maintains "even though you can't see or hear them at all, a person's a person, no matter how small". He comes up against a cranky Kangaroo and a few others who try to stop him, but Horton triumphs and saves  Whoville. Babies start from a tiny speck and you carry that baby through the nine months, safely and with love - like Horton and the speck.

I am not saying pregnant women look like elephants, although with both of my pregnancies I resembled a beached whale. I could not venture anywhere near a beach without having wet towels and buckets of water thrown over me with reassurances that I would be back out in the ocean and swimming with my pod! I was never as glam as the celebrity mums.

Anyway, my point is it is a touching sentiment on pregnancy, love and kindness (awww I am tearing up just thinking about it!). My children love the story called Are You My Mother? A tale about a baby bird who hatches and then goes on an adventure to find it's mummy. You could take this story and create a game of your own where guests have to match baby photos of the other guests with photos of their mothers. The colours used in Dr Seusses' illustrations are blue, green, red, yellow and white. His characters are quirky, mischevous but with good intentions and appeal to the imaginations of both children and adults alike.

Australia's #1 online party shop, Pink Frosting, stock a Dr Seuss baby shower theme with an assortment of items, decorations and candy (check out the Rainbow Striped Lollipops - YUM!) in colours to match the illustrations and they even have Dr Seuss Baby Party Packs (for 8 guests).

So for something different, make like the Cat In A Hat and throw a baby shower that is fun, quirky and full of love for both mum and bub.
