Anti Wedding Cake Ideas

These days couples are breaking from tradition when it comes to the Wedding Cake. With personal tastes, budgets, timing, health reasons or just something different, couples are serving up new and inventive takes on the “Wedding Cake”.  The wedding cake industry is quite lucrative and as such can be quite pricey. My dream wedding cake was quoted to me for $700.00! It was then not my dream wedding cake.

Looking through bridal magazines and websites I have seen cheese wheels stacked from largest at the bottom to smallest on top like a tiered wedding cake. I have seen cheese boards set up with a wedding ornament or cake topper with it. You may like the idea of a candy bar for the guests to come up and select their own little bag of treats, and for the cutting of the cake, why not cut into a giant coconut toasted marshmallow decorated with a cute cake topper? Instead of cake, serve up a selection of your favourite pies such as pecan pie, cherry pie or apple (with or without rhubarb) pie. Display the pies on a cake stands either as whole large pies which everyone takes a slice or miniature bite-size pies. What about ice cream? Have an ice cream bar and ice cream wedding cake (could also be frozen yogurt or gelato). I think an ice cream bar would be awesome – watch your guest walking about with ice cream cones, ice cream sandwiches or sundae cups.

The cheese option would be served with a lovely glass of wine, crackers and fruit. You could have it out on display and then let the staff take it to the kitchen and prepare it and then deliver cheese platters to each table. Oh! Mini fondue sets for each table and let the guests try fondue! That would definitely be more memorable than a wedding cake. Pink Frosting sell tea light candles… Cupcakes also fall into the non-wedding cake category. Sit down with the barman in the lead up to your wedding and have him concoct a wedding cocktail and mocktail in your honour – the Savoy created a cocktail in honour of Prince William’s wedding to Catherine, have your barman do the same and on a table; a large vase of flowers surrounded by the cocktail/mocktail glasses, tea lights and crystal scatters for a “wow” factor. For ideas for cocktails Pink Frosting has articles to help inspire you in your own planning.

The pros for opting for non-wedding cakes would be the cost could work out to be less than a great big wedding cake. More money in the kitty could go to your dress, reception or honeymoon! If there are food allergies, a different option would enable everyone to be able to enjoy a slice of “cake”. If you are pushed for time and need something quickly the non-cake option would be quicker to facilitate over a wedding cake – many cake decorators can be booked out months to a year in advance! I guess the con would be not having that traditional wedding cake, but if you like to be different, if you like to be bold then maybe the non-cake options are right up your alley.
