An Adventure or Treasure Party for Boys
Twelve year old boys are full of beans and will give anything a go. I grew up with three younger brothers and I remember what they were all like around that age. For your birthday boy why not put on an Adventure theme birthday party? Held outdoors you can set up obstacle courses, games to test skill and a base camp for them to regroup and eat party food. Have them hop through tyres, throw balls through suspended hoops, crawl through a tunnel, swing from ropes, solve puzzles, have a knot-tying competition and work their way to the Treasure of the Ancients (aka cold coins and lollies). If you are holding the party at a public playground then you can incorporate the activity gym into your games for the kids.
Base camp, set up a basic tent, or canvas sheet with a pretend camp fire and stretcher beds for them to sit on. This will be their spot to talk about their adventures, solve clues together and pig out on the awesome party food you will have set up for them. Once the basics are sorted then log onto Australia’s #1 Party Shop for the decorations to kit out a wild adventure party. Using white paper, moist teabags and a lighter, make up the invitation to help your birthday boy seek the Treasure of the Ancients. On the white paper, print or write out the invitation. Once the ink is dry, rub either a moist tea bag or damp coffee granules over the paper on both sides to give it that old, rough look. Allow the invitations to dry before carefully holding a lighter to the edge of the paper, turning it and singing the edges. Gently tap off any burnt pieces and you are then left with old parchment.
Style the venue with a colour scheme of green, brown, yellow, orange and gold. Hang up skull and cross bones with the words “DANGER!” “NONE SHALL PASS!” “TURN AWAY NOW!” attached to the bunting with cobwebs and spiders. Set up green and brown streamers about to look like vines and wrapping them around poles and parts of the obstacle course. At every checkpoint have a small token for the adventurer to collect – a piece to the final puzzle that will allow them to unlock the Treasure of the Ancients (in this case a treasure chest piñata and a bat). The final task being a timed test of skill and speed as they have to transfer coloured sand from one jar to another. The fastest one then gets the treasure chest which is laden with tasty treasures. For fun, why don’t you paint up garden gnomes all golden and hand them out for the kids to keep too.
Suspend from inside the tent little lanterns and inside them place little led candles (safer than actual candles) to create an ambience in the tent. Serve up the party food on hunter green plates, bowls and cups along with these awesome wooden cutlery sets. For the menu, serve party pies, sausage rolls, pasta salad, meatballs, nachos, tortillas and why not try a Jungle Curry?
From the Donna Hay book – Cool Kids Cook:
1 onion, chopped
2tsp red curry paste
2 ½ cups coconut milk
4 chicken breast fillets, sliced
1 red capsicum, chopped
1 cup of chopped greens (broccoli, beans)
Heat the oil in the frying pan, add in the onions and cook for 3 minutes or until the onion has softened. Add the red curry paste, cook for one minute. Pour in the coconut milk and simmer for five minutes. Finally add the chicken, capsicum and green veg and simmer the curry for five minutes or until the chicken is cooked. Serve with steamed Jasmine rice. (Serves 4, so adjust quantities accordingly).
If you are going to have a piñata, then you don’t have to worry about a candy bar, instead why not have a dessert station with frog in a pond jelly, fruit salad cups, lime cordials, a small bowl filled with creepy crawly candy, oat cookies and green coloured cupcakes with brown icing. For the birthday cake, decorate it with green icing, green edible glitter and lolly snakes, spiders, grubs all sliding over chocolate coins. By the end of the party, the boys will not want to go home, so for a day full of action and adventure send your guests home with their own little favour boxes filled with tasty trinkets, a gold gnome and a thank you card made up like the invitations. For all your party decorations and goodies, shop online at Pink Frosting. They will have what you need to help find the Treasure of the Ancients.
