I have moved about state to state more times than I can care to think about. When it comes to saying goodbye to friends and family as we or they get ready to up and move again has become the norm for us, and to be honest I myself have not been to or held a farewell party. I could hold one for my hubby whose job sees him flying off every five minutes from one end of the place to the other, but I think the novelty would soon wear out although the kids would get a kick out of the party food and balloons, and I would single-handedly be propping up the party sales for Pink Frosting in the process!

No one likes to say good bye, and even though moving about comes with my family’s lifestyle (hubby’s job) does not mean it is any easier for us. As we drive away from the friends we have made we do feel sadness at leaving them, they probably kick up their heels and have a party “woo-hoo the crazy Jarvis clan are gone!” Farewelling family and friends as they move to a new job, new city or embark on some wild overseas trek will bring tears and some fears for some. One way to help deal with it is to throw a fare well party for them. If you really like the person it is for, and you know you are really going to miss them then you can make it a great big party – a gesture of your love and well wishes. Or, you could give them a biscuit and a cup of tea and tell them the real big party will be the welcome home party – an insurance policy for them to come home (parents take note!)

I think fare well parties are a wonderful way in dealing with the changes. It is not a forever thing, you will see them again but in the meantime you are going to party on and make some great memories. If your work buddy has decided to move on to another job, if your parents are about to take off in a camper van around the country, if your child is about to jump on a plane and go overseas, if your best friend is moving to another state then put together one great party to make them miss you so much that they will always keep in touch and eventually return to you safe and sound.

The party can be as formal or informal as you like. Book out a reception venue or hold it at your home. Standard fare well party decorations are balloons, streamers, sparklers but also add a personal touch to the event with things like napkins that have been personalised with the guest of honour’s name, the date and where they are about to trek off to. For a new job, use little typewriter place cards. Hand out little luggage tags or suitcase mint tins. Have the invites or place cards look like airline tickets or passports. For the invite, have someone there to stamp the visa as they walk into the party. You have to set up a photo booth backdrop, get heaps of great photos for them to take with them on their travels. If the party is for your child who is now leaving home why not have little nests with sugared almonds set out on the tables for each guest and a birdcage with the door open to symbolise the “baby bird” flying the coup. Have a candy bar set up to take the bitterness out of goodbyes. There really are so many things you can do to show them how much you will miss them. Who knows, if you throw a really good party they may just decide to stay! Just looking at it, I may very well start throwing farewell parties for my hubby. J
