98, 99, 100 - 100th Birthday Party Ideas

100thbirthday.jpg

I want to live to be a century. According the pros who are living that dream, their advice has been “eat your veggies”, “don’t eat veggies”, “drink beer/whisky/rum/milk”, “smoke”, “don’t smoke”, “live in the country”, “don’t watch the news”, “get out and exercise”, “don’t exercise”, “have nookie everyday”…oh no, wait! That is Joan Collin’s weight-loss advice! I kid you not, according to her; she has kept her svelte figure by enjoying romps in the boudoir. Back to the 100 years birthday, I think the real secrets to hitting one hundred, and one they can all attest to is to just enjoy your life, laugh, and love and don’t sweat the small stuff. By the time one reaches one hundred years of age, you can be sure they have accrued some heavy duty life experience up their well-worn sleeves and as such their lives should be celebrated and admired. The fact that when they turn one hundred the Queen herself sends them a telegram congratulating them on such an achievement is nothing to be sniffed at! I wonder when I turn one hundred who will my telegram come from?

Life is precious and beautiful. It is filled with highs and lows, love and loss. Your path bends and flexes, shaping you to fit the earth you tread upon. No journey is the same. Every birthday is special and if you happen to have the honour of knowing someone who is about to turn one hundred, then why not make it a spectacular birthday? I’m not talking about fireworks, or a day out thrill seeking. Guaranteed by that age you will want to just sit back and relax, so put together some of the following ideas:

First off, have a look on-line and research the year they were born. For example, if they are turning 100 this year you may want to compile little trivia notes to display for the guests to read – on the 14th April RMS Titanic struck an iceberg in the Northern Atlantic Ocean, sinking the following day. Also Paramount Pictures (oldest cinematic company) was founded in Hollywood, California by Mr Adolph Zuker. The Maternity Allowance Act 1912 was enacted in Australia where mother’s (excluding Indigenous and non-citizens) received a baby bonus allowance of, wait for it…five pounds!!! Australia also sent their first female Olympians to compete in the Summer Olympics in Stockholm. The Aussies won 2 gold, 2 silver and 3 bronze medals. Fanny Durack won the 100m freestyle.

Choose a venue that is easily accessible and can accommodate special needs. Decide on the invitations; why not go for a classic themed invite? Australia’s # 1 Party Shop has a section for the 100th birthday with items like balloons, bunting, streamers, pom poms and lanterns to decorate. In 1912, the Golden Wattle was officially declared Australia’s floral emblem, so add touches of yellow to the decorations and little bunches of golden wattle. Set tables up named after some of the Centenarian’s favourite things/places and enjoy their favourite food and drinks. On the birthday cake, have a beautiful celebration cake topper (personalised too!) At some point, set the scene for a slide show of photos of their one hundred years and at the end of it present them with all the photos in a book with pages where guests can write their birthday wishes in and even include a copy of the Queens’ telegram in there. Play their favourite songs, sing and dance along to them. Spend time with the birthday gentleman/lady to learn their secrets to life share some jokes and hold them close. It really is an incredible opportunity to hold company with one who has lived a long lifetime and has learned and seen so much. It is a celebration so keep it lively and fun with bright colours and filled with laughter. Fill gift bags with their favourite candy. If the party is a small and intimate one, use the picture coasters for the guests, each coaster with a photo of the guest of honour at various stages of their life.

At the end of the day though, consider yourself blessed to know someone who has reached one hundred years of age. You can learn so much from them, they are here for a reason, to pass on their knowledge. Thank them by celebrating a life well lived with help from Pink Frosting, Australia’s #1 Party Shop.
